No sound in my sony vaio when i start it.

i start my laptop and no sound comes sometimes.i cannot hear anything.i open sites.songs are been played in orkut but i cant listen to them.there is voice recognition in my laptop.i made a shortcut on desktop for that.may be since then its creating this problem.i appreciate if someone can help me regarding that.
