I apologize for not clarifying my question. I got distracted and it must have just gone through.

Currently I have an IBook G4 on it's last leg. The CD-ROM is on the out's and I am having problems with any type of preferences application. I have tried launching it from the Apple logo however, when I click on it, nothing happens. Then I try to go into the Applications/Utilities folder and launching it from there but it isn't even there. I have ran Disk Utility and it doesn't come up with anything. I have even tried doing the single user mode and entering in the code 'fdck -yk' or something like that and it said that everything was okay.

I have my Startup disks on an external hard drives in iso format. Because I am unable to use my CD drive, I converted them to my external hard drive from my husbands PC computer.

So how do I fix all these problems?

That's the issue. I tried installing my Mac OS X. I have it in dmg format on my external hard drive. My computer now won't even load and sticks on the Apple logo with the status pinwheel. I am at all loss and have been researching wayyyy too long. How do I replace all my info on my IBook G4 and do a fresh Mac OS X install?

  • Tina Durant Aug 03, 2009

Yeah, I have done all that and my computer wouldn't recognize the other devices to boot from. So I just gave it to a guy that is mac savy and I believe he can salvage it.

Next on the problem list is that I just installed a new optical drive. The bar that comes down when you have a disc in it will not allow any discs to be inserted. I wonder if it is a connection problem with the wires rather than the device itself.

Has anyone else have this issue with IBook G4? If so, what is the diagnosis? On top of that, where can I sell my old optical drive and for how much?

I really don't understand what you are saying.

My best guess is that you are trying to launch a preference file, but I don't know why you would do that. If you are having a problem with one of the applications, you could try deleting the corresponding preference file.

You can open preference files with "property list editor", but that is part of the developers kit. Most regular users don't have it installed. Don't try to edit one of these files unless you really understand how user preferences work.

The System Preferences app should reside in the Applications folder. If it does not, then you could do a search for it. Click the Spotlight (magnifying glass) icon on the far right of the menubar, and type in "system preferences". If spotlight can't find it, then you'll probably need to re-install your OS.

You won't be able to boot off the ISO images located on the external drive.

    1) You could copy the data from the CD directly to the external drive (using the PC), and then try to boot off of that. During boot, hold down the option key. This will give you a list of available boot devices. Then select your external drive.

    2) You could always purchase an external CD/DVD drive to boot up of the OS disks. I can understand not wanting to spend money on an old computer. You could also just borrow an external CD/CVD drive from someone.

    3) This option requires another macintosh. You can boot up the dead computer while holding down the T key. This will turn it into a large external firewire drive. Hook it up to another macintosh via firewire. It will appear on the second mac's desktop as an external drive. Then you can use the second mac and it's cd drive to install the os onto the dead computer.

How to use LockDown
  • When you will run the Lockdown application for the first time, you will be asked to setup a Safety Code and a Password. This password will be used to unlock any locked application and to open Lockdown itself. Safety code is useful in case you forget your LockDown password.
  • Once you have setup the Password and safety code, you will see all your iPhone applications listed on next screen.
  • Select any application you want to lock, a Lock button will appear. By tapping that button your selected application will be locked and a little lock icon will appear next to that locked application.
  • Now if you close LockDown App and try to open you locked application (Mail app in this example), you will be prompted to enter the password to open it. Use your Lockdown password to open that App.
(Once you open the app, use it and when you close the app it will be automatically locked again. So no need to re-lock it in LockDown.)

Lets check other options in Lock Down.
  • Tap LockDown to launch it. This time you'll be asked to input the password to open LockDown. Do it.
  • Tapping any locked application in LockDown will prompt you if you want to Unlock it. Pressing the Unlock button will perform the unlock that App.
  • Locked Applications button at the top right quickly shows all the locked application only rather scrolling through all applications to locate locked ones.
  • Under Settings tab at Bottom, following options are available:Locking Options
    • Lock All Applications
    • Unlock All Applications
    • Lock This Application (ON/OFF)
    Password Management
    • Change Saftey Word

    • Forgot Password
    Other Settings
    • Lockdown Dylib (If you turn it OFF, even if you open a locked application it will not prompt for password. So, it's helpful when you are using your iPhone by yourself. See the details in screenshot. )
    • Lock Icon Moving (When turned ON it do NOT let anyone to move any icon to preserve your arrangement of icons.)
    • Lock App Deletion (When turned ON it do NOT let anyone to delete any application without your permission.)
    • Enable Launch Button (When turned ON, Lockdown will show a launch button when you open a locked application and input password.)

I am using this great application since the day it's supported with iPhone OS 3.0. It's working like a charm and will keep it installed because of its usefulness and surely recommend it.

HOW DO I RECORD ON MY CAMERA

Click 'start' > Computer > C:drive > Windows > SUYIN NB Cam > Then Right Click LiveCam, Choose Send to Desktop (as shortcut) After launching, you will have to manually activate your mic, cam, record mic, and time limit prefrences each time you record a video. It's clunky software, but at least you don't have to download some risky 3rd party viral junk............you can also see this link........

Pagemaker spell checking problem

Pagemaker 7 will not readily allow Spell checking under Windows 7. To do this you will need to run the Pagemaker application as the Administrator. This can either be by clicking on the right hand mouse botton (right handed persons) while the cursor is on the Pagemaker launch icon either on the desktop, Windows Start up menu or Application Program launch menu and then choosing to run the Application as Administrator. Pagemake launched like this will normally allow spell checking, without  the Pagemaker application will return distionary missing or does not support spelling.
Disabling account control in Windows 7 before running the Pagemaker, which I do not recommend also achieves this in Windows 7. All the above applies for Windows Vista too!

Can't run applications from an expansion card

In some cases, applications developed before Palm OS® 4.0 that are loaded to an expansion card may encounter errors when launched. However, these applications generally run properly when installed directly to your handheld's internal memory. Here's how to do that: 1. Access the Applications launcher. 2. Open the Menus. 3. From the App menu, select Copy. 4. In the Copy To: pulldown menu at the top of the screen, select your expansion card. 5. In the list of applications, locate the file you want to copy to your handheld's internal memory. Highlight the file. 6. At the bottom of the screen, select Copy. Then select Done. 7. Go back to the Applications launcher. At the top right of the screen, there's a pulldown menu with different application categories. Choose All (this is a category that's on your handheld, not on your expansion card). 8. Locate the application you copied, and launch it from this screen. 9. Contact the developer of the application for more information on application compatibility with expansion cards.
