Conect the camera to your PC. Install the drive. And reformat it from either, File manager or My Computer.
Good luck,

I have an older digital concepts camera and went to buy another SD card. I was told the newer SDHC 4GB card would possibly not be compatible. How can I know?

Look at the specifications page in the manual. If it mentions SD but not SDHC then most likely an SDHC card will not work. Without knowing the model of the camera I can give you neither yes nor no.

Of course, another way to find out would be to try it. You're not going to damage either the card or the camera by trying to format the card. It either works or it doesn't.

For the camera to be able to read the files, they must be in the same format as created on the camera itself - this means folder structure, date, naming convention and all other EXIF information. To be able to use the card in the camera again, it will need formatting - in the camera, obviously.

If you have downloaded pictures from your card to the computer the memory card needs to be reformatted to the camera it is being used in. The camera and computer firmware and software are not compatible, you might get away without formatting the memory card a few times but eventually the performance suffers to the point the camera can no longer find clean space to write to. As a rule once you download pictures the card needs formatting.

I hope the expert told you to format the card in the camera.

Press the MENU button. Use left/right to select the wrench-and-hammer icon. Use up/down to select "Format". Press the FUNC/SET button. Use left/right to select "OK" and press FUNC/SET.

In general, you should format the card each time you finish transferring all your pictures to your computer.

Well when you fromat the storage device it completely wipes out all info on the drive. By just deleting the photos off once you are done there is still bits of info left behind. You actually gain more storage after a fresh reformat then if you just delete photos. But if you don' feel like formatting thats ok it won't hurt anything.
