Question about Computers & Internet

POWER CORD I just purchased a Targus 70 w power notebook adapter. When I plug the power cord into the other half ( which has the square power box on it) the blue light comes on and goes off. It does not seem to be getting power to my laptop. Is this power cord defective? Should the blue light stay on?

Most notebook adapters i've seen have the light stay on as long as it's supplying power to the notebook. so your p/s maybe defective - my guess is that something's tripping it - are you sure the p/s is suitable for your particular notebook (based on voltage/current/power requirements)?

It looks like the 65-70 watts that the Targus can provide is insufficient to both charge your notebook's battery and power the CPU at the same time. Try removing the battery to see if that solves the problem. Your Targus may be able to work without tripping when it doesn't have to do the double duty of charging the battery and operating the notebook. If you can confirm that your adaptor is tripping due to overload, you may have to get a higher power unit.

I purchased a battery from atbatt.com that said it was compatible with my inspiron 9400. It must be good because my computer will power on with it. I also purchased a new targus charger from Wal-mart which...

Hello.

Return your power adapter to Walmart and replace. I'd suggest taking the laptop with you to further test in the store with the adapter you buy. Be certain that the new power adapter is compatible with the specific Dell Inspiron notebook series that you own.

Hope this helps.

Do you have to use the plug in for the laptop that has the square then between the wall plug in an the computer or can you use a plug in that dont have that square then

If by "square between the wall plug," you mean the power adapter box in the middle of the power cord, then yes, a power adapter is required.   Laptops usually run on low voltage DC, whereas wall sockets are higher voltage AC, so the box is needed to do the conversion.  There are universal adapters available that may work for you, you just have to match the voltage, make sure the amperage is adequate, i.e., equal to or higher on the adapter than on the label on the laptop, and make sure the plug on the end of the cable of the adapter that plugs into the laptop is compatible. There are usually several "tips" so that you can attach the one that fits.   Finally, where the tip is attached to the cable, make sure the polarity matches the diagram on the laptop, usually right next to the hole where you plug it in.

Can I use ther Targus Adaptor for Inspiron 1525

On the long term, a power adapter with a bigger amperage can damage battery and battery charger.

Better to get an adapter with same specs as the 65/70W one , or an original replacemant:

Hi; I Have a Dell XPS 1530 which is dull if I do not have it plugged in. I have three Targus power cords and cannot use any of them. The one that has the S35 tip fits, but only engaged...

I am showing the AC adpater specifications as:
Input Voltage Range: AC 100V - 240V
Output Voltage: DC 19.5V
Output Current: 4.62A
Power: 90 Watt
Does your adapter meet those specifications?
Although I am a proponent of Targus products, possibly purchasing an OEM adapter may solve the problem. We have successfully purchased ones available from reputible vendors on eBay at a discount.
Have you checked to always show the battery status in the system tray so that you can verify when the AC adapter is actually charging versus an intermittent connection or malfunctioning power socket?

No power

Try purchasing an original adapter. I've had several machine of different make through my shop that the Targus adapter just simply won't run. For example, a Dell Inspiron 1100 and HP dv4000 won't run at all, and a Dell Latitude 1501 and Gateway crv503 will run but won't charge the battery. Targus adapters are junk, if you can, get your money back.

Power trouble

Try another known good AC adapter. You could try a universal AC adapter (targus/Igo or kensington). Call around to see what computer stores in your area will let you try one before you buy it.

If that doesnt solve it then you will have to take it somewhere to be disassembled and repaired.

Notebook smells like burning plastic.

If the new Targus charger is really rated correctly for your laptop, your battery isn?t charging and you smell the burning plastic coming from the laptop when you plug it in that is a fairly dangerous situation and you shouldn?t plug it back in anymore. The power from the charger runs through a PCB board which distributes power to other components in your laptop. I suspect one of the components (probably a capacitor) had a catastrophic failure and is the cause of the smell and the lack of battery charging. Once again assuming that the Targus is the correct one for your laptop current you probably have a laptop damaged beyond home or economical repair.
