I don't believe that's the problem. It starts and run fine, just not with the key turned to the run position. I must use a push button switch with the key on the start position to get it to start. Why won't it start like it should with the key?.

Hi

Are you saying you have bypassed the normal ignition switch by connecting a push button switch? The likelihood in this case is that the ignition switch itself is bad.

There are also other safety switches on your mower that must open to allow current to flow to the starter i.e clutch/brake switch and on some models a PTO switch. Any of these could be faulty and stopping the flow of current but seeing as the engine starts with the push button - the most likely cause is the ignition switch itself is faulty as although it is turning on to allow current to flow - it is has closed contact when you engage the starter portion of the switch.

Hope this helps. Please remember to rate my answer. Many Thanks.

Hi there,

It looks like that engine should have a fuel shut off soleniod if it does it would be what holds the carb bowl on and have one wire coming out of it. If it has that check the wire it should have 12 volts when the key is turned on. And you should be able to hear or feel it click or snap when you turn key on and off. If that looks good or does not have it check bowl for gas and let me know what you find.

Good Luck!!

Thanks

What would be the cause of a Kohler 25hp twin, backfiring through carb from one cylinder

now the kohler v-twin does have a bit of a problem with camshafts in this size range , your gonna need to remove valve cover on head side that you suspect is bad , verify that valves move in order (one at a time) as you turn over by hand with spark plugs removed (both sides)

Starter clicks when you push starter button

Hi Anonymous, and the usual suspects are:
1.Ignition/Light Key Switch not in IGNITION position.
2.Engine Stop switch in the OFF position.
3.Discharged battery, loose or corroded connections (solenoid chatters).
4. Bank Angle Sensor tripped and Ignition/Light Key Switch not cycled to Off and then back to Ignition
5. Starter control circuit, relay or solenoid faulty.
6. Electric starter shaft pinion gear not engaging or over-running clutch slipping.

2000 honda cvic will not start but if you push on the it will try to start but will not stay running

Do you notice anything unusual with the dash lights when you turn the key on. All the warning lights should illuminate. If they do not but then come on as you start to rotate the key into the start position than you probably have a bad ignition switch.

If you turn the key to the start position and hold it there (only do this for a few seconds) will the car stay running until you let go of the key? Another clue that the ignition switch may be bad.

if you turn the key to the start position and the vehicle starts slowly let the key rotate back to the run position until the starter disengages. If the vehicle continues to run let go of the key. If the vehicle stalls than the ignition switch is definitely bad.

When i turn key on nothing happens , no head lights come on or anyting, battery is good.i hosed it off the other day with it running, when i turned on pto switch it died then nothing.

Headlights may not run on the battery, but rather the magneto/alternator.
Make sure all of your safeties are set: Transmission in neutral, Cutter blades set to OFF, Brakes on and locked, Rider in seat.
Then try to start.

Old style starter relay wiring

Normally on the old style starter solenoid/relay you have two large bolts for the battery and starter cables to attach to. There are two other smaller bolts that are used for the starter actuation. The "I" is used to add voltage to the points so the engine will start while the solenoid is in the start position, the other "S" goes to the start button or start side of the ignition switch. Old style ignitions used to drop the voltage to the coil during start and the engine would turn and turn until the key was released and then the engine would catch and start. To cure this they made the solenoids were designed to give temp power to the ignition system when cranking and starting. Hope this helps, RAC
