My projector is also incredibly loud. I have already replaced the color wheel once. At first it seemed to work, so I believe it needs to be cleaned or lubricated. Does anyone know how this can be done?

I don't know if it's the color wheel but my dell 2200mp suddenly started making a huge racket while running and now is so load to be unusable. might be the color wheel - i opened up the lamp casing and found a small curved piece of yellow glass.
i am going to try opening the whole case now...

I have the same problem, it makes a loud noise! I thought it was a fan, but they seem fine, i opened it up also and just like tim, i found a small peice of curved glass that looked broken. When i turn it on it still works it is just loud, is it the bulb? they are like $300 to replace the bulb so i want to make sure that is the problem before i buy a new one!

Hi,

The color wheel runs with a high speed. you can check the free rotation by hand.it is not recommended to lubricate it but you can replace with the new one as the sealed motor is there for the same. check the color wheel is not broken from different colors.

I have DELL 2300MP wheels available and many others too. The only way to stop the noise is to replace the color wheel. On most models it only takes a few minutes. If you need one for any projector please email me at prmhelp@earthlink.net Thanks, Jim

Hi,
In the past I have tried many lubricants on bad color wheels but there's no way that I know of to stop them from squealing without replacing them. Try this: If you still need a color wheel I have some available that fit many InFocus, Dell, Optoma, Etc. projectors that will include the projector service manual for you DIY do it yourselfers or you can send me the projector & I can install it for you; includes a good cleaning & checkup. I have an infocus 4805 screenplay projector and i was using it when there was a pop and then i lost all color in my projector now its only black and white the bulb filter is clean what do i do.

Your projector is DLP technology. It employs a "color wheel" to provide colors other than blank/white. That "pop" you heard unfortunately may have been a malfunction of the color wheel mechanism, probably the motor. (It runs at very high RPM)

Sounds like you may have to find a shop to service your projector.

Samsung hlr5078wx DLP tv. rumbling noise and shaky picture

This is a color wheel problem.
I would recommend to use professional help because you can make more damage to the optical engine. Not to mention index delay have to be re-adjusted in special service menu after repair is complete.
Regards.

Anyone having problems with excessive noise that seems to come from the color wheel area? Sounds like bearing picture looks OK. Moving the projector just a little can cause the winding to come back.

The color wheel spins at a high rate of speed like a cooling fan...Since the total light output from the lamp is focused on the small aperture that contains the wheel, a huge amount of heat is generated...the motor could have expanded due to heat and be binding, causing the noise. The only way to fix this problem is to have the color wheel replaced. A service center is your best bet. Is the unit under any kind of warranty?---Rick

Projection tv has really loud buzz or hum

You may not see any deterioration in the picture when the color wheel begins to go bad. The noise will get louder and eventually, it will shut down or the wheel will shatter while the motor continues to spin. If that happens, you'll have a black and white picture.

If its a Samsung DLP that is mercury vapor lamp driven, its a safe bet the color wheel is going bad.

I heard a pop and now the projector only shows black and white.

The color wheel has failed in youtr projector. There are 4 pieces of glass in the color wheel which fit togeter in a "pie" formation and they are red, blue, yellow & clear. This wheel is spun by a motor. The glass is glued to the motor's hub, and, when it fails the glass segments are thown off the hub. This gives you a B&W picture because all of the light is allowed to shine through the optics all of the time. Replace the color wheel with Toshiba part no: 23125963. It will be about $65. No soldering is involved, just use care with the ribbon cable to the motor. You will need a no. 2 phillips screwdriver and a set of jeweles screwdrivers to do this.

Color

Hi, If you have tried other video sources & still get the same results. It sounds like the motor that turns the color wheel is going bad, These motor's run from 5,000 to 10,000 rpm depending on model & are usually the first point of failure in a color wheel based DLP projector, If you don't count the lamp.
Overtime it may begin to make a squealing noise. Usually you can find replacement motors on the internet by searching the part number printed on the motor google is great for searching part numbers.
