Select the maxtor HDD as master by setting the Jumper to the extreme left of the hdd; i.e. next to the data cable.

Serial ATA drives don't need master/slave jumpers. You can choose "computer select". In fact, you should be a ble to run an ATA drive with no jumper. When you enter set up, it should automatically be recognized with the right bios version.

I have a maxtor H.D. model # 31024h1 , i cannot find the jumper settings to distinguish between master and slave

Typically, for older MAXTOR drives, put the jumper on the 2 pins closest to where the ribbon-cable connects, to set it to 'MASTER'.
Remove all the jumpers to set it to 'SLAVE'.
