Question about Hayward Northstar 2 - Hp In Ground Pool Pump

How can it put together a northstart pump? i put it apart to replace the diffuser, but it is to difficult to put it together. I used clamps to push the motor and the pump but it does not close

    Did you leave the old diffesure gasket in the pump and have a new one on the new diffuser, therefore having too thick a gasket inside?

Get hayward pump apart model sp4010ns


I have had Northstar pumps apart but it has been a while. I found a narrative written by another expert, macdirk, describing how to replace the motor and here it is.

In order to remove the motor, first turn the motor locking ring. This holds the too halves of the pump together. There should be a small tab you have to press in, then grab the round handle, and spin the outer sleeve to unlock. Once you do this the back half of the can be pulled away. This can be very hard sometimes. If the pump and motor still work, you can flip the switch on for a sec or two, and it will pop the back half away from the front half. If the motor is not working then you'll just have to twist, wiggle and pull till you get it apart. After this make sure the power is off, breaker off, etc. and you can remove two screw from the plastic cover on the tail of the motor and disconnect the wires, and remove that half the pump. Next step is to just pull off the diffuser, which may actually have stuck inside the front half the pump. Next remove the impeller, by unscrewing while locking the shaft from the rear with a wrench. if there is a screw in the center of the impeller threaded into motor shaft remove that first. This should be a left handed thread, so unscrew by turning clockwise. The impeller should unscrew counter clockwise like normal. Next remove the seal plate. That should expose 4 bolts holding the motor to the motor mounting plate. Once you remove this you can remove the old seal, clean, and install new seal. you should replace the diffuser and seal plate o-ring as well. Normally I don't recommend a lot of lube on o-rings, but this one can be a ****** to get back together, so use plenty of lube. As I said getting the back half inserted back into the front half is a pain, so you'll just have to work it. Make sure the motor locking ring is forward of the mounting brace that sits on the ground. This can be hard, but if you get it at the right angle it will go raight in place. Make sure the diffeser and/or diffuser o-ring does not slip off into the pump housing when your trying to get it lined up and back into place. There is a notch in the housing and seal plate that have to line up. Sometimes a clamp or ratcheting strap can be used to help pop the two halves back together.
Now all that being said.... it might be worth it to just take the whole pump in to a pump repair shop and let them rebuild it, or put a new motor and seals for ya. At least check the price and consider it. This pump has unions to install it so there is no pipe work required to remove the whole darn thing. Good Luck, and let me know if you have more questions.

I can't get the two pieces of the pump to fit snuggly enough to get the clamp to fit


The problem is the o-rings. The diffuser o-ring has to fit tight into the volute to go back together correctly. This is a common o-ring and can be found at any on-line supplier. You will need the model number of your pump and they should be able to help you. (you may also e-mail me your model and i can give you the part number: adamh@newconceptchem.com)

As long as you have it open, replace the housing o-ring as well, this will ensure a good seal on the v-clamp once you get it back together. It is a good idea to have these extra two o-rings along with the shaft seal anytime you open the wet end of the pump, just in-case there is bad wear on the current seals.

Im getting a loud buzzing noise when the pump is running


could be an obstruction in the impeller, or the bearings going out. You can split the pump in two be removing the large clamp or 4-6 bolts holding the two halves together. (not the 4 bolts holding the motor to seal plate, but the the bolts holding the seal plate to the seal plate housing. once you remove the clamp or bolts, the motor with seal plate and impeller and diffuser can all be pulled back away from the pump. You need to remove the diffuser (plastic housing that goes around the impeller) usually by a series of 3 to 6 small screws. Now you can easily try and spin the impeller and check for obstructions that might have bound it. If you do not see anything stuck in the impeller, then the noise is likely coming from the motor (probably the bearings) you can replace the motor, or have it rebuilt. if your not gunna rebuild it you can deal with it as long as the noise doesn't bother you and the motor is not getting too hot

How do you replace a seal on a Sta-Rite pool pump? How do you remove the old seal? Ceramic and graphite.


Replacing a shaft seal requires some good mechanical ability.
first, always make sure power is off at the breaker before you work.
You'll have to remove the band holding the wet end to the seal plate. Then remove the diffuser covering the impeller. Remove the cover on the back of the motor. You either need a 7/16 open end wrench or a armature tool to hold the motor shaft while you unthread the impeller (if the impeller has a screw in the middle, you will have to remove it by turning clockwise, left hand threads) counterclockwise. You can then pull the carbon part of the seal off of the impeller, make sure to remove all of it including the metal sleeve. You will then have to remove the seal plate and push the ceramic part out from the back. You can then clean and lube the seal plate and install the new ceramic part of the seal, try not to touch the ceramic with your hands if possible. You can then lightly lube the impeller shaft and slide the carbon part of the seal with the carbon facing toward the ceramic as you thread it on. If the seal plate had a copper heat sink, you can either replace it or use a different size seal. (I believe it's a PS-201) Re-install the seal plate, impeller (and screw if applicable) and diffuser. You should now be ready to mate the seal plate to the wet end. Make sure you fill the pump before you try starting it up, especially with a new (dry) seal.

If you are talking about reinstalling the motor to the pump. Lube the diffuser oring and seal plate oring with magic lube.. its a silicon lube.

Removal and installation of diffuser and impeller kit


All jucuzzi pumps are some of the most difficult to repair.Pump front should seperate from body(volute) of pump by means of screws, or some kind of band. Diffuser should have ss screws, or
be held in plsce by notches or both. Impellor spins counter clockwise to come off. Can only remove impellor with impellor wrench, or very strong hand. Rear of motor must be held in place with normally a 7-16 wrench, allen head wrench or screwdriver. Depends on manufacturer of motor. Then impellor can be removed!
Should replace shaft seal under impellor. Can seperate body of pump from motor by turning four outer bolts on back of motor. Must mark rear cover of motor so lines up exact for reassebly. Ussually 1/4 inch socket wrench.Seal can be pushed out from back to front with the corrrect size socket and a very light hammer.
Try to factory Jacuzzi seal, they are better than aftermarket.
Coat rubber on seal with light silicone, and press back into place without touching or marring seal face. Best way is use other half of seal (spring piece) to gently but firmly reseat seal. Examine body from rear to make sure seal seats. Reassemble as taken apart, or just take to a qualified service tech at a well established pool/spa place. Kirk
