Question about Toshiba Computers & Internet

2 Answers

I purchased a toshiba wireless laptop in October 2008. It was soley for the purpose of taking it into Mexico to email. However, unless I am right in the office where email is available, I can't get a connection. If I go just outside the door, there is no connection. Why is this?

I understand what you are saying, however, other people - some with Toshiba - and other types of laptops, are able to get on a site 10 or 20 feet away.

I knew about the wireless card, however, are they not expensive and do you not have to pay a monthly fee?

thank you for your information. I will contact toshiba and see if they can help. Other people can sit in their house 50 feet away and still connect.

It could be that wireless range is about 300 feet under the best conditions. And that the wireless signals do not penetrate brick,/concrete/stucco very well, especially if reinforced with rebar or wire. A different laptop will probably act just the same too.

If the wireless in the laptop is not performing as well as it counterparts, then it could have a problem with it's internal wireless. You should still have warranty on this unit. Contact Toshiba for support. They should walk you through settings, which could be a problem if 802.11b is disabled.

Yes, they will probably be upset and they will probably file a NPB.
send them a mail apologize but Im sure you wont be the first or last NPB they have had.
Although I have no idea where you got the idea that you could pay in October for it, unless you charge it to a credit card.

Contact AT&T or Verizon for 4G wireless service in Mexico. They will issue you a dongle to the USB port to pick-up the service that's within range.

Hi I,m thinking about buying an Acer Aspire just to surf the net etc, nothing fancy and have never hooked up laptop access at home...what do I need?? Im a woman who deals with computer problems all day at...

It all depends what you want for internet, wired, or wireless. I would say in your case, you would be better off with wireless internet. Also, i would recommend that you explore your options before purchasing a laptop, acer laptops are not very good in my opinion, they don't last long, and they are usually outdated by at least 6 months. You may want to check out tigerdirect.com, newegg.com, or frys.com, those are all great sites for purchasing computers, and computer accessories. But on to the original question, i'm going to assume you want wireless internet. You will have to make sure the laptop you purchase has wifi/wireless built in. The website you are purchasing the laptop from, or the representative in the store you're purchasing it from should be able to tell you whether or not it has wifi. Next you will need a wireless router, you want a router with wireless g functionality, they cost from $30 - $75 and will serve your purposes perfectly. The router should come with setup instructions, usually they're pretty user friendly. That is all you need for a wireless home network, unless you have desktop computers that you would like to have wireless, then you would have to get a wireless card for each one.

Your touchpad is very sensitive. Be sure to keep your fingers away from it when typing. I have the same problem with my Toshiba laptop--I decided that unless I was in a travelling situation, I would use a small wireless mouse. I just disabled the touchpad.

Wireless in Mexico

Wireless connectivity is the same everywhere in the world. The biggest problem you are likely to run into in Mexico is finding a wireless signal to connect to. The better hotels should have internet connections, but Mexico is not "wired" like the USA is.

Your laptop should be able to connect to any unsecured wireless signal anywhere. I suggest you try taking it with you next time you go downtown in your area, and experiment with finding wireless signals. College campuses are a great place to find wireless, as well as having lots of students who are used to connecting to wireless all over town, who might be willing to help you connect.

The icon you need to use to find a wireless signal can be found in the little bar next to your digital clock, in the lower right corner of your screen.

I have been told that you make a vcr - dvd machine that will convert vhs videos to dvd , if this is true pls advise model number and approximate price

There are DVD/VHS combo units that allow you to record VHS tapes onto DVDs. The price of these units range from about $150 up to $300+ depending on the quality of the brand you want. I have seen them on sale for less than $150, but you would need to look around for the sales. There is a problem with these units, however. Most newer VHS movies (and DVDs) are encoded for copyright protection and cannot be copied - unless you want to purchase a Descrambler. A Descrambler allows you to bypass the copyright codes and are to be used soley for the purpose of copying purchased movies. There are strict copyright laws as you have seen during the intro of VHS/DVD movies. If you intend to use the unit for copying things like TV shows, movies on cable, or home movies, then this would be a worthwhile purchase. I have just a standard Toshiba DVD burner and believe me, it gets a lot of use, mostly for TV shows on prime time TV. I work second shift and would miss out if I didn't have it. I can guarantee that you will get your moneys worth out of it. You can find them pretty much anywhere that sells electronics. As far as the Descrambler, I'm not sure they are carried in your local department store. The only ones that I have seen have been in magazine advertisements and once on The Home Shopping Network (HSN) and the price on there was around $100 - this was about 2 years ago. I hope that I answered your questions. Please take a few seconds to rate how helpful this post was for you. Thanks and good luck. billyho1977@FixYa

You have to purchase the map upgrades from Garmin via DVD, I found a reputable vendor on ebay that was a little cheaper than garmin and alot cheaper than best buy.
