Freezer and lower compartment do not maintain cold.

My Kenmore unit is 6 years old. How do i go about testing if there is a refrigerant leak or replace the refrigerant? Does not maintain cold either in the lower compartment or the freezer. I cleaned the back coils.

You have to be epa certf'd in order to buy r134a or work on the sealed system. you can use an elect.leak detector or install a UV dye drier but it's a job for a tech. first check if both evap and cond. fan motors are your compressor running? does your rear frzr wall has heavy frost on it?

If the refrigerator isn't cool, you need to answer some questions, then see if the compressor is running.

First, answer these questions:

  • Is the refrigerator completely dead? If so, see “It's stopped completely.”

  • Is the thermostat knob turned to the proper setting? If not, reset it.

Next, see if the compressor motor is running

The compressor is a football-sized case with no apparent moving parts. It's on the outside of the refrigerator at the back near the bottom. If it is humming or making a continuous noise and your refrigerator is still not cooling, there may be a more serious problem with one or more of several different components, we recommend contacting a qualified appliance repair technician for further help.

If the compressor is not running but you do have power to the refrigerator, there may be a problem with one or more of these:

  • The compressor

  • The Thermostat

  • The overload, relay, or capacitor

  • The defrost timer

  • The condenser fan motor

Have a 28 year old Kenmore refrigerator, model 8604481. Made in 1988. I'm getting frost over the lower vents in the freezer. The coils and all look fine after taking off the back.

Hello Mr. Groeger,

I was not able to match the model number for your refrigerator, but given the age of the unit, the number may have been discontinued or changed. I am going to assume that the unit has a defrosting system.

If you have it, refer to your owner's manual. There should also be a schematic of the unit attached on the back or near the bottom.

At 28 years old, there could be multiple issues, but if you are handy and familiar with a volt-ohm-meter, you can check some items yourself.

1. Make sure the compressor is indeed running. Before you unplug the unit, check the evaporator fan inside the freezer compartment to be sure it runs. If the compressor or fan isn't running, it's possible that a component in the defrost system is preventing the compressor from running.

-----Turn off the power and unplug the unit to check these items-----------

2. Check the defrost thermostat - it is located in the freezer compartment but will require that remove the back or side panel in the freezer to expose the evaporator coil.

3. Check the defrost timer - they are usually located near the compressor but you may have to hunt a little

4. Check the defrost heating element - it is also located in the freezer compartment and requires that the panel covering the evaporator (coil) be removed. Once you expose the evaporator, it's possible that the coil will be completely iced up which is a symptom of a defrost system problem.

5. Look for any burnt wiring in the freezer compartment. When a defrost thermostat fails they will sometimes burn out.

6. If all these items are ok, you may have to check the compressor circuit or look for a refrigerant leak (if the compressor won't run).

Here is a link to some standard parts for a typical refrigerator. If you find a bad part, you could contact this company or any other you wish. I do not work for this company.

Model 106.9630280 The freezer is working but

you probably have a bad air circulation fan or a restriction in the ductwork between the freezer and the refrigerator that the circulation fan supplies the cold air from the freezer to the refrigerator compartment. you should be able to hear the circulation fan motor running when the unit is in normal operation mode. the only time the fan will not be running is when the unit is in defrost mode which occurs once every six to eight hours depending on the defrost timer in your unit.

Freezer and Refrigerator wont get cold

Good day,
Looks as if you covered most bases.
You didn't say if the fan motor in the freezer compartment is running. Open the freezer door. You should be able to see and hear it. if not, remove the rear panel in the freezer and inspect and replace if needed. If no luck here......
Based on everything you said, it sounds as if you have a serious problem with the sealed system which includes the compressor.

You do not recharge a refrigerator. You fix the leaks, and then recharge. But it could be a restriction in the internal system, or possibly bad valves in the compressor.

In either case, you'll need a qualified tech to sort it out.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Freezer is building up frost and refrigerator is not cold enoough

Almost certainly, you have a leak within the freezer compartment.

The cooling system will use a divertor valve to concentrate coolant to the fridge or freezer compartment - whichever is necessary to maintain selected temperatures.

If a seal within either compartment is compromised and leaks then the coolant will be excessively diverted to that area in an attempt to lower it's temperature - the other section will suffer since more coolant is diverted to the weaker area; the weaker area that is being excessively cooled will also have more moist air circulating, hence moisture will contribute to a build up of ice - exacerbating the problem.

Ensure that both fridge and freezer doors are closing properly, if they appear to be secure then also check that the seals are airtight - there should be no ice accumulating around them.

You might need to re-align the doors, or less likely, replace the door seals.

Please reply if you require further clarification or help.

possible that it is frozen up behind freezer compartment panels restricting air flow, check this by emptying freezer and removing panels, if so then you have a defrost problem causing this. If you find nothing and it is fine just not cold then with it being that age repair is expensive to have unit this age recharged and most would suggest replacing it.

If you have determined that the evaporator fan in back of the freezer compartment is running, then you might have a stuck or broken air diffuser. The diffuser acts like a damper to divert air into the refrigerator compartment. Sometimes they jam or break due to frost buildup.

Refrigerator temp

If it has a refrigerant leak, replace the fridge. Not many techs service r-12 refrigerant systems anymore because the cost is rediculous. The cooling problem could be associated with the leak or a defrost system failure or a fan motor failure. Almost anything that will cause this will require some parts to be replaced. I wouldn't recommend repair on a unit with gas leak.
