Question about Radio Shack TRC-503 CB Radio

I'm Thinking About a CB Radio

I plugged in my cell phone, to the cigarette lighter of my 1993 Dodge van. It didn't seem to charge. Now I'm thinking about buying a CB Radio. I don't know anything about them. I thought maybe I could get one for my son too, but he doesn't have a vehicle. Do C B Radios work from electricity, too, or just from a vehicle? I don't know what brand of C B Radio to get. I'll need one with tech support. Thanks, Donna

Re: I'm Thinking About a CB Radio

Hello Donna,

I do a line by line reply to your questions:

Q) Do C B Radios work from electricity, too, or just from a vehicle?
A) You will need to buy a 12volt power supply to power the CB if you are using it in your home. Also you will have to have a house mounted antenna.

Statement) I don't know what brand of C B Radio to get. I'll need one with tech support.
Reply) For simplicity, I would suggest getting a Realistic brand CB from Radio Shack, they will also have the antenna and installation hardware (for home and vehicle) along with a SWR meter (you will need this, trust me). As for tech support well any brand you go with will be a problem in the area of tech support, most of the time you will have to find a CB shop or some that is CB savvy to act as your tech support.

I hope this helps

Take a deep breath and start over! The best way to power this little radio is probably through the cigarette lighter or 12vdc accessory jack. It is simple and straight forward and no fuse box or negative ground wires to worry about. Go the Radio Shack, purchase an adaptor (cig lighter type) and hook it up to your radio wiring being careful to watch polarity. You may have to have your ignition on to run the radio, but that is much safer that maybe blowing up the unit.

Unless you are running a larger more powerful unit or an amp, there is no added benefit to hooking the radio into the fuse box.

Can cigarette lighter plug be used for 93t galaxy radio?

Yes, but be very careful of polarity. If you hook it up backwards the radio will stop working because it will blow the polarity protection diode.

I purchased a used Cobra 19 DXIV cb radio that has a black & red wire with a fuse. I was told that the wires can be wired into the fuse box under my dash. How do I do this?

You may need a test light to do this.

1. Decide if you want the power to the radio to be full time or only when the key is on.

2. If you want part time the easiest power source to access is the cigarette lighter. You can either splice into the power wire going to the cigarette lighter (center lead) or you can get a cigarette lighter plug and install it on the end of your two power wires. Center is the positive. The plug costs about $4 and takes about 10 minutes to install.

3. If you want full time you will need to find a circuit that is hot at all times and splice into it.

Use a noise filter on the power as just about all circuits in the vehicle are liable to be noisy power circuits and this will show up in form of excessive static noise during radio operation.

The red with the fuse is your positive lead. Do not hook these up backwards as this will certainly ruin the radio.

Low to NO noise at all coming out the speaker.

The antenna is the weakest link in the system, I would start there. Do you have access to another antenna that you know works ?
