Question about Genius Wayne Submersible Sump Pump With Switch

1 Answer

Same issue, one of two pumps

I installed two of these fancy new switch having pumps from Wayne in two seprate sumps. One of them works flawlessly. It seems to turn on a little earlier than I'd like, but it turns off before the pump cavitates. The second pump, in a seprate but equal sized sump cavitates for at least 10 seconds on every cycle. This time of year, it cycles about every minute.

I'm thinking about mechanically mounting the switch higher in the sump somehow, perhaps with some zip ties.

Has anyone contacted Wayne about this issue?

I'm assuming the switch in Question is a Float-switch that is positioned in-line of the Power-supply to the Pump. The hinge that activates the switch inside the Float could be faulty. You can check it by connecting a dif-
ferent device to the plug, activate the switch
(Float upright) and deactivate (Float horizontal)
Mounting the switch with zip ties is a good
idea. The Float should be dangeling about 3"
above the Pumphead, thus keeping it submersed. Hope it helps.

Are the genius switches any better than the float switches?

If you are placing a sump pump in a smaller, more confined area then yes. They both have their downfalls, and either can fail without notice. The ones that slide up and down the rod can get stuck or jammed, sometimes even due to build up on the rod. I tend to favor the genius switches, but either needs to be checked out periodically.

You can raise the switch in relation to the pump to ensure that shut off occurs before the pump starts sucking air. Somewhere between 1-2" ought to do it. The switch is attached to a 'spindle' on the pump through 2 holes in the switch. I unscrewed the spindle so that I could take the top switch hole off of the spindle while leaving the bottom hole on. Then I screwed the spindle back in. This allowed the switch to be raised in relation to the pump. I drilled two small holes in a plastic part near the top of the pump & secured the top hole of the switch to the pump body with string. Crude, but effective.
