Try installing a brand new needle. Rethread the machine from the very beginning. The machine could be out of time, ie the needle and hook timing do not match.

Thread started bunching on underside of project & tangling around bobbin. Now the needle won't pick up bobbin thread, even after changing needle 2x and re-threading upper thread. What's wrong?

Hmmm, could be several things.
Try a brand new needle. Try a different brand of thread.
Remove the top thread from the machine. RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning. Verify the thread path is correct.

If it still will not pick up the bobbin thread, the machine could be out of time.

Basic Tips for All

  1. Always turn the handwheel TOWARDS you (counter clockwise) as turning it in the opposite direction (away from you, clockwise) may knock the timing out requiring repair from a service center.
  2. Always be sure your presser foot is in the DOWN position before sewing. Sewing with the presser foot in the up position will cause your thread to tangle and your bobbin to jam.
  3. Change needles regularly (after 16 hours of use) as dull/weak needles can cause damage to your machine and fabric. Only use SINGER needles on your SINGER sewing machine.
  4. Always be sure you are using the correct bobbin for your machine. Class 66, Class 15 and Class 15J bobbins look very similar. However, using the incorrect bobbin class in your machine can cause damage.

I received a 221 singer feather light as a gift.... Love using old machines. It will not pick up the bobbin thread. When it cycles the top thread hangs up and breaks.

Lucky you!

First thing to always try is a brand new needle. A lot of sewing machine problems are due to an old, dull, bent needle.

Most likely the machine has been knocked out of time--the needle and hook are out of sync. Search for sewing machine timing or take it or service.

Machine is out of time

This will be difficult to explain but basically if you remove the plate covering the bobbin holder you will see the bobbin holder. It will have a small prong that should pass the eye of the needle and picks up the thread from the needle. If the timing is out then this pick up prong will be either too soon or will have gone past the eye. get on the web and type in sewing machine needle timing and you will get diagrams for most makes. I did that and fixed an old singer industrial machine.

I own a Singer 258, the needle does not pick up the bobbin thread

is the needle the right one for the machine?
is the needle & thread correct for the fabric?
it's possible that the machine is out of time & would have to be retimed by a sewing machine shop
