Number 1: do you have the flash on? if you don't that's what happens, the snapshots taken at night will be dark.
number 2: even with the flash on, the background will most likely be dark being that the light from the flash isn't going to travel far enough to for you to see every detail. also the closest thing to the camera or the subject will be brighter of course because the light hits it first.
and if that's still not it then it's probably a defect in the camera or maybe a lens error. it could just be a sorry brand name and you need to get a better camera. when all else fails, take it to be repaired.

IR/ night vision, Black and white also seem to work good most of the time too. Just keep playing around until you find one that suites your needs. Happy refraction !!!!.

I do not have an answer, but do have the same camera with the same night time problem. I have just used it for the first time and all the night pictures are black. I assume the flash is not going off. I have a second one that I will test as well. Maybe some one knows something else but I find now way to toggle the flash off and on.

My D40 camera will not make night pictures consistently. About 90% of the time pictures taken at night are just black. From what I have read on the forums this must be a very common problem. What is the...

D40s are well known for flash failures...in 3-shot burst mode, due to charge time of flash circuit, 1st pic good; next 2 black. Battery life greatly reduced in this mode.

Sorry to tell you but JVC is a well-known un-reliable brand and if it's cheap, probably even worse. U may have screen burn from leaving a games console on while plugged into the tv, even if its not showing the game, it will burn it onto the screen. :(

Night pictures do not come out

To take night photo's you need to use a tripod. this will enable you to take long exposures without the blur. If you use flash it will only illuminate objects near the camera.

Taking pictures outside at night

there are so many solutions to this I barely know where to begin.

First, set the Dial to M, then on the multimode (round) button, push on the left side to bring the exposure time up. For night shots I find that F2.7 and any time of 1" or more yields fairly good shots.

You should see the change in the view finder, or the lcd if you're one to use that.
