Is the compressor running when it does this cool hot thing? And the fan? I'm asking cause if it is the compressor, You wouldn't wand to pay a service tech to tell you the obvious.

Its a compressor problem. compressors are not user serviceable. You need to contact an air conditioner technician for this problem.

Our AC keeps cutting out. It runs for a few minutes then stops. have to switch off and restart. Any idea why? Have emptied water and cleaned filter recently

Look for:
  1. the ac needs air flow thru the indoor and outdoor radiators
  2. the outdoor radiator coil should get warm/hot and produce warm air.
  3. indoor radiator coil needs should get cold and produce cold air.
The ac needs the fan motor(s) working and compressor running and pumping. Compressor skinny copper line hot and thick line cold.

You would need to find out if the compressor continues to run when the cold air stops.

I have a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 that will blow cold and hot air for only a few minutes. After that is only ambient air temps. It is a 5.7 ltr, automatic with only one set of climate controls. The heater core...

you say it will blow cold and hot air for only a few minutes. You don't say but I assume you mean will blow cold a few min. when turned on AC max , blow hot only a few min. when turned to heater hot. Assuming thats the situation and you say AC charged and shows good on the low side -you should charge the AC to a full charge on the low side will cause problems with the AC air compressor kicking on and off. I suggest while the engine is running and turned to AC cold max watch the AC air compressor clutch to see if it does indeed kick on and off if so charge completely. As far as the heater make certain you coolant is all the way to the top and the best way to do this is when engine is completely cold remove radiator cap and fill completely and completely close cap then fill overflow container just to the cold level. That should fix your problem.

AC will blow cold air for a few minutes then start blowing hot air, cut the engine and start it again and blow cold air for a few minutes then start blowing hot air again. Just filled up the freon and the...

you have moisture in the system this causes your expancion valve to freeze up an stop working, thats why it works for sort time and when it de-freezes stars working again. you need to do a EVAC & RECHARGE with a good AC service equipment, specially attention to pull vacumm por at least 20minutes so you get all moisture out of the system.
Good luck

My air conditioner is putting out cold air for a few minutes then it's warm for 5 minutes and then it's getting cold again? I had the compressor changed by a mechanic who wasn;t sure how much freon it...

OK, the requirement of Freon is 2 cans...as for the Cold/Hot problem, a little info first; the PCM controls the AC clutch (adjusts the IAC, Idle Air Control valve to speed up the idle when turning on the AC unit, and slows down the idle after turning off the AC unit), also the PCM controls the relay that cycles the AC clutch. My experience has been that the relay is "going South". This bad boy is in the fuse block in the engine compartment by the Air Filter box. The relay is an inexpensive item, and if you live where the AC unit is used frequently, I would recommend it being replaced every 3-5 years. Be sure to check with the mechanic to make sure he properly recharged the system, and if so, try these ideas.

I have a 1997 rodeo. The a/c will come on and stay on for a few minutes. Blows cold air. After a few minutes, the ac shuts off.If I shut off the a/c button for a couple of minutes and turn it back on,the...

It sounds like it is your high pressure switch located on the high side supply line of your AC. When the temperature is hot, it is harder for the condenser to cool off the freon flowing through it causing the pressure in the system to rise. Also, check to make sure that you condenser on the front of the truck is clean and free of debris. If you have an electric fan, make sure it is coming on when the AC is turned on.

Hope this helps,

Jeff

A/C air sometimes cold, sometimes not on VW Beetle 2001 Turbo

AC will not work with temps are cold even when it is turned on. The air is colder cause the temp is colder. The AC cycles in hot weather because the AC charge is low and needs recharging. You will know this if you open the hood run the AC and you will hear the clicking sound of the AC compressor magnetic clutch. You can recharge it easily buy buying a compatible can of refrigerant. I suggest buying the kit with the gage so you don't overcharge the system which will cause freeze ups
