How to repair/reuse plastic suction cups

Plastic suction cups are used in many applications to hold things to hard smooth surfaces like glass, ceramic, laminate, metal, plastic, etc. With time the suction cups loose their holding (suction) strength due to hardening or deterioration. Before trashing and/or spending cash try this if you want a permanent or lasting installation.

1. Place the item in the position you want it to remain installed. Make matching marks to ensure that is were you want the item installed. Mark a dot in the center were the suction cup is to hold.

2. Clean the old suction cup suction face and mating surface thoroughly, ensure there is not grease or contaminants.

3. Apply a thin coat of urethane base all purpose adhesive such as UHU, Liquid Nails, etc. to the suction face and mating surface (do not use cyanoacrilates such as Super Glue or water based glues, they are too hard or too weak for the job).

4. Wait approximately 15-30 seconds for the adhesive dry to touch and press or install the item with suction cups at the desired location using your matching marks as guides. Keep the pressure for a few seconds to ensure good bonding. Once installed wait for at least six hours for the adhesive to completely dry, before loading or applying weight to your item if it is a hanger or shelve.

5. This should do the trick. If you need to disassemble your item in the future you may peel the suction cups gently using a scraper tool.
