Question about Whirlpool GD5SHAX Side by Side Refrigerator

Whirlpool GC5SHEXNS03 started making hissing sounds and could hear water draining into pan at bottom. Then noticed that neither freezer or 'frig are cooling and motor not turning on. I turned it off/on but still getting warmer.

Seems that perhaps your unit stopped in a defrost cycle. If this has a solid-state control board, it's probably the board that has failed. If it's the old style without a board read on.

All frost-free refrigerator-freezers with exception for the ones with solid-state control have a thing in the system called a Defrost Timer. The thing is a little clock of sorts that tracks accumulated running time. Every 8 hours of run time the thing cycles through a defrost cycle. The defrost cycle is necessitated by the humidity that forms ice crystals on the freezing coils, if the frost is not eradicated it can build up to the point where no air flows over the coils to chill the inside of the box. (it may keep the freezer cold but no air goes to the fridge part. If completely solid neither cools) Most timers are located on the front of the machine, behind that removable grille under the door. Sometimes it's found in the refrigerator behind a plastic cover. The timer has a round hollow shaft through it, and can be turned with a screwdriver (screwdriver should be 1/4 inch wide and should not fit inside shaft). In your case since the compressor is not running, give the shaft a slow twist until a click is heard and the compressor starts. If the compressor does not start you may have other problems. If it does then get a replacement timer.

Even if you don't attempt your own repair this is good to know. Also know that the defrost timer is not an expensive repair if you have to have some do it.

Ice in bottom of freezer. What causes this?

Usually cause by a clogged drain in the back of the freezer. try to clean with hot water and make sure the water goes all the way downn to the drain pan. .
Note: all frost free refrigerator defrost a couple of time a-day; the water needs to drain into the drain-pan under the frig. check under the frig to see if the drain pan is totally dry, if dry, the drain is surely clogged.

good luck

Unplugged frig overnite once I plugged back in made a gurgeling sound whenever I opened the door what would that be?

Usually that is caused by a bad defrost heater thermostat or defrost timer. Failure to automatically defrost is the cause of freezing up.
If you don't feel up to doing the work yourself you should have an appliance repair shop look at it.

The gurgling is caused by water in the catch pan under the fridge. When you defrosted it some of the water made it into the drip pan (and maybe overflowed onto the floor). The fan inside the compressor area under and behind the freezer may be splashing in the excess water in the drip pan. This by itself is not a real problem since it is designed to automatically evaporate the water drained during automatic defrosting, but the excess water and potential overflow onto the floor can become a problem.

Water at bottome of refrigerator

Under the draws in the back, there should be a drain hole that drains water down to the drain pan under the unit. Check to make sure it's not blocked with food or frozen water.

Whirlpool gold refrigerator leaking under neath on the side

If its leaking all the time you could have a problem with the water supply line (if it has an icemaker)Or the solenoid valve (water valve) that opens to refill the icemaker after it drops (harvests) the ice.Or the plastic water lines that run from the valve up to the icemaker. You should pull the frig out from the wall and check the back for leaks. You could also Just shut off the water supply to the unit and see if it stops. These leeks cause a lot of damage when they go unnoticed for a long time.I would check it out asap.

The drain in the freezer is clogging. When the defrost switches on, the backed-up ice thaws and starts dripping down into the fridge area.

Easiest is probably to turn off the fridge, let it thaw, then check the freezer drain to see if you can unclog it.

Otherwise, you have to pull out the bottom and back parts in the freezer (which will probably have some sort of ice frozen to them). Once you see the drain pan, get a turkey baster and flat head screw driver. You'll have to make a hole in the ice above the drain and squirt hot water until you hear it start draining. The drain hole is off center to the right in the drain pan.

Good luck

Water is dripping from freezer to shelves in fridge

first remove the floor and back wall of the freezer. remove the ice from the floor and drain pan careful not to damage the evaporator and drain pan. to the right of cener on the bottom of the drain pan is the drain hole. use a turkey baster and hot water to thaw the drain, you should hear water dripping into the drain pan when thawed. install a heat probe whirlpool part number 819043. or wrap a thick piece ( about the size of a pencil lead) of copper wire around the heater located under the evaporator. make it long enough to go about 2 inches into the drain. don't let the wire touch the sides of the drain hole or touch the bottom of the tube, this will prevent the drain from freezing. i recommend using the heat probe from whirlpool but the wire will work too. hope this helps.

Hello, this sounds like you have a blockage in the drain tube, remove panel back/bottom of freezer..you may see ice build up...melt ice with hair dryer/heat gun...you will see a pan below evaporator...melt ice in pan...dry water up in pan with paper towel...now you should see a hole in pan that leads to drain tube...pour some hot water in pan..wait a couple minutes..mop up water and repeat this step 2-3 times....once you have done this find some flexible curatain wire or electrical wire..poke down the hole until you see the water drain..now it is clear..put back panel back and you are good to go. The reason you see water in the fridge is because the water has been leaking into the freezer and down the vent into the fridge instead of running into the drain hole...Please feel free to comment again if you need any further assistance. Whirlpool drain clog

yes it is most likely the drain that is plugged and or frozen up. to repair this you will need to remove the rear access cover inside the freezer compartment clear all the ice from the drain pan and flush hot water thru the drain hole located in the drain pan. this is a fairly easy repair you can do youself. the hardest part will be removing and reinstalling the rear cover. good luck peyton.
BTW I use a turkey baster or large syringe filled with hot water to flush the drain line with.

Roper frig, freezer on top ,frozen under tray.water in bottom of frig

sounds like you have a frozen defrost drain. This is a fairly easy repair you can do yourself.
  • Unplug refrigerator
  • unload food from freezer
  • remove icemaker if present (there are 3 screws remove the one on the bottom and loosen the 2 on top of icemaker then lift it off the 2 screws unplug from wiring harness)
  • remove 2 screws holding rear cover in place
  • move cover to the side or remove from unit altogether
  • defrost any and all ice from bottom of freezer and aluminum drain pan that is now exposed
  • flush drain hole that you will see once ice is cleared with warm water. (sometimes I use a large syringe or turkey baster to forcefully flush hot water thru the drain tube)

that should fix you up. if you have any further questions leave me a comment here and I'll gladly help any way I can. thanks Peytonreassemble in reverse order
