Maytag Dryer MDE6400AYW. Dries clothing but does not shut off in Auto Mode. Tried Timer mode but the knob does not advance on its own and dryer does not shut off in that mode either. Replace Timer?

Some of them timer can be oiled, (just a little zoom oil no wd-40) if it is real hard to turn, the knob can become cracked and the timer motor itself it may not have enough ump to move the gears and sometimes oiling the timer and moving it around many times loosens em up.

Dryer won't start

This usually caused by a blown thermal fuse on the blower housing located behind the rear access panel. This thermal fuse is wired in series with the motor and if it blows, power to the motor is terminated and the motor cannot run. No dryer function works when the motor cannot run.

Unplug the dryer or disconnect power then remove the rear access panel. Locate the thermal fuse then bypass it for troubleshooting purposes.

Bypass the thermal fuse by disconnecting the wires and joining it together. Insulate properly and plug the dryer back in. The thermal fuse is indeed blown and needs to be replaced if the dryer starts. Do not use the dryer with the thermal fuse bypassed due to fire hazards.

Clean the lint filter and make sure the vent system is not restricted then replace the thermal fuse including the cycling thermostat (thermistor for other models) as a standard operating procedure and preventive measure. The thermal fuse usually cuts out due to a failed cycling thermostat(thermistor for other models).

Why would my dryer not be heating?

Most likely the heating element. But look for blockages that could cause safety's to trip before purchasing expensive heating elements is what I always say. To prevent fires dryers have a series of limits wired into the harness to shut down the element in case the dryer over heats. Maytag blowers are made of plastic and often are a cause of overheating. The clothes take much longer to dry if a blower wheel is to blame, so check that too. themobilian_94.jpgthemobilian_95.jpgthemobilian_96.jpgthemobilian_97.jpgGive me your model number and I will be more specific. Not all maytags are the same.

My Dryer Maytag PYE2300AYW is dead

HI. A blown fuse will show no continuity when measured with a meter. Before replacing the fuse, make sure the blower wheel is not broken or clogged, and there is nothing blocking the venting.

Concerning the Control Thermostat(53-2880). This is the main control thermostat. if it is covered in lint as you have sated, this will confirm thermostat failure. this has tripped the thermal fuse in this case, totally rendering the dryer inoperable at this time. you will need to replace the Control thermostat and thermal fuse as well. this will fix your unit.

The thermal fuse can be tested be using a basic voltage needle but, it is really not needed. the thermostat has failed. the over cover of lint has shorted the device(lint will create an arch that will ruin the device)

Once the thermostat failed, the heat will rise to a unacceptable rate and, this will trip the thermal fuse and kill the dryer. its a safety feature to prevent a fire in your home.

Maytag model MDE9206AYW will not heat. Checked coil, fuses and limits and am now trying to check cycling thermister. Can you tell me how? also do you have any suggestions. suspect dryer went out during...

My generic wiring diagram doesn't show this dryer uses a thermistor, only thermostats. The difference is a thermistor has to have an electronic control to interpret the values the thermistor is sending. A thermostat is mechanical and only open or closes at a preengineered temperature. You would need to check the ohm readings of a thermistor at different temperatures to test it, but you only need to know continuity or no continuity to test a thermostat. First make sure you have 240 volts to the dryer, the heater is the only part that needs 240 to run. It's possible for only half of the breaker to trip and give the dryer only 120 volts, in this case everything but the heater would run. If you've got 240 volts, to the dryer, unplug it, then check for continuity between the 2 terminals of the 2 thermal fuses, cycling thermostat, and hi limit thermostat and heater. Remember you must disconnect one wire before testing to prevent incorrect readings. If it still runs, just no heat, the 2 thermal fuses should be ok, but check them anyways. If they all test ok you'll need to check the temp selector switch. You'll need the wiring diagram to show which terminals to check at each heat setting. If that checks out you'll need to move to the timer, again you'll need the diagram. If the timer checks, the only thing left is the centifugal switch in the motor, and the only way to check that is to test it with the motor running.
