Has suction, but why isn't it picking up?

I had to recently replace the brush bar in my DC14 animal. The bristles seem to be too short. Will I need to replace the sole plate as well?cleaned entire machine; checked/cleaned filters; checked hoses - no cracks; no grinding noise from the clutch assembly.

Good evening Amy

You can see the full manual for the DC14 here
https://www.dyson.com/medialibrary/Files/Dyson/Support/downloads/US/Floorcare/manuals/dc14_opmanual_usa2007%20pdf.pdf The troubleshooting section addresses this problem on several fronts, though the executive summary boils down to:

  1. Re-check that there aren't obstructions in the lines.
  2. Make sure that all of those bends and junctions are fully snapped into place (this has been the one that gets me the most with my DC-07 after I clean it)
  3. Make sure that the filters are clean, clean them if necessary, or replace them
  4. Since you mention replacing the brush. make sure the brush is snapped in flush with the soleplate. In my experience, the eccentric assemblies at the end of the brushbar holding it into the head are really easy to get mounted not-quite-right for alignment, leading to the soleplate not closing properly. Take another look to see if one or both of them are mis-aligned.
  5. make sure the vacuum is reclined. Full upright shifts suction to the handle for the accessories.
  6. Make sure that the accessory hose isn't clogged and doesn't have a hole in it. You'll want to stretch it out fully to check the walls for holes.

    I hope this helps!
    Good Luck
    D

Problems with suction on floor of vac

Often times when people bring a vac in for repairs and say it has no suction at the floor it has good suction but not good agitation. Make sure the belts in the clutch are new (some people are selling used clutches with stretched out belts) and the brush roll is good. If the agitation from the brush roll is not good it will not pick up even light soils like hair and lint.

Loss of suction

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.
I'm sorry to hear you've had difficulty with your DC44 Animal. It's normal for air to blow out of the back of the machine - this is where the exhaust air is returned to the room after passing through the cyclone pack.
However, if your machine doesn't seem to be picking up as well as usual and you've recently washed the filter, this may be due to a blockage. To check the motorised carbon fibre floor tool, wand and bin inlet for any obstructions, please follow the steps shown in our online Support guide:
http://www.dyson.co.uk/support/dc44/dc44-animal/my-machine-is-not-working/machine-not-sucking-picking-up-as-well-as-usual-dc44/no-resolved-redirect-to-check-the-wand/check-wand
The motorised carbon fibre floor tool is driven by it's own motor, rather than the machine's airflow. If it isn't rotating, the video attached should help you locate anything which could be jamming the brush bar. Make sure you remove any threads or hair from around the brush bar carefully using scissors, taking care to avoid causing any damage to the bristles.
I'm confident this will resolve the issue, but if you would like some further help you can reach the Dyson customer Helpline directly by calling us on 0800 298 0298 (UK), or 1-866-693-9766 (US).
Best wishes,

DC14 the suction is fine from the hose and brush bar wasnt turning with no suction at all from the bottom of the vacuum

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC14. If it doesn't seem to be picking up as well as usual, it's possible that there's a blockage in the system, and you may need to give the filter a wash.

The easiest way to check for and remove any blockages is to follow the steps shown in our online support guide:

http://www.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=626&product=DC14-ALLFLOORS_US

The correct way to wash the filter is shown in the video linked below. Under normal use, this should be done at least once every 3-6 months. Use cold water without any detergents, and ensure the filter is totally dry before replacing it - this may take up to 12 hours.

http://www.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=1461&product=DC14-ALLFLOORS_US

Hopefully, by clearing any obstructions and washing the filter, you should be able to resolve your issue without further assistance. However, if you've tried this and are still concerned, it's probably best if you get in touch with us directly. You can call us free on 08002980298 (UK), or 1866MYDYSON (US). One of our experts will be happy to run through some troubleshooting over the phone with you recommend the best course of action.

Kind regards,

Jack

My dyson vacuum appears to still have suction but it doesnt

That means that the belt is stretched or worn. This causes the roller brush to not be able to turn the way its supposed to against the resistance of the carpet and therefore won't pick up well. You need to replace the belt. Here are the belts you need:

With the DC14 in its upright position, and looking from the back, there is an access hatch just to the right and bottom of the dust canister. Remove this and check for any obstruction. With the hatch still removed, tilt the handle back (as if vacuuming a floor), and you should spot that the mechanism in to which the access hatch fits changes over from one hole to another. This is how suction is transfreered from the telescopic arm to the brush bar when the unit is taken out of the upright position.
With the handle tilted back, the hole you can see is one end of a flexible pipe that leads to the brush bar. Check for any blockage and/or foriegn objects. If there is no obvious problem, you'll need to check the other end of the pipe. You can do this by removing the toe plate on the bottom of the brush bar area. The plate is held by 3 or 4 half turn fasterners - a 5 pence piece is ideal for undoing these.

If still no joy, the only other thing it might be is that the brush bar isnt spinning - this isnt actually lack of suction, but without brush rotation any upright hoover is far less effieicnt at picking up bits from the floor. Brushes not spinning on a DC14 is quiet a difficult thing to fix on a DC14 as there are two separate rubber belts, one of which is hidden under a plastic cover. There is also a clutch mechanism between the belts that can cause problems some times.

If suction is not what it was, check all of your hoses and connections for vacuum leaks. And the beater roll should always be turning - check out the belt for slippage.

Sounds like you have two separate problems here.  If the brush bar does not rotate, probably the belt is broken. This is easily replaced, but you need to be precise about which model you've got so you get the right belt.
Loss of suction is due either to a blockage or, quite often, to a split in the short length of clear plastic hose that leads back from the brush bar enclosure.  Repair is possible but replacement is better.
If you need more help, post here again.
