Defrost not working on my hotpoint fridge model HSS25GFPAWW

I have HSS25GFPAWW Hotpoint fridge. It was not defrosting. I had a tech. come out and he determined that the mother board was bad. The part number is wr55x10552. He had a replacement board on his truck that had the same part number. He replaced the board and went on his way. A few weeks later the fridge was frosting up and I called the tech back. He came back and determined that this board was bad too. Since he had that board for a while he orded a complete new board. The board that came in the mail superseeds the old board. It's part number is WR55X10656. When he put that board in it would not start the fridge at all. He sent that back and ordered another on WR55X10656. That had the same result, nothing would work. While troubleshooting this for the 3rd time, he put a jumper wire on the back of a connector and it defrosted fine. What is going on?

SOURCE: Freezer won't defrost

savey73,
I think I know what is wrong. First the defrost thermostat you are talking about I believe is the round metal type with possibly a pink and an orange wire coming out of it. That is not the defrost thermostat as most people know it. That is a defrost overheat termination thermostat that opens only over 140 degrees F, that is why your old good one and your new good one show closed at room temp. If you read on the outside of the metal cover you will find it has a L140 indicating the limit of 140 deg.
Now to what should be causing your problem. You should find on the evaporator coil at the top left side of the evaporator coil a part that has 2 white wires going into what looks like about a 1" long X 1/4" round plastic thing. That little white plastic thing is a THERMISTOR. If it is bad your defrost will not work. Sounds like that is the only thing you have not replaced. There is no polarization of the wires That should FixYa

SOURCE: hotpoint freezer fza54 frost free,

Power off the freezer.

Remove all freezer drawers.

Remove the four screws retaining the ducting at the back of the freezer compartment. Top at the top, two at the bottom

Carefully pull the ducting out - it's located in the guide slots for the freezer drawers, and should pull out without too much drama.

This exposes the air circulating fan, and the evaporator coil (the bit that gets chilled).

In my case, despite a defrost of the frost-free section, the evaporator section was one massive chunk of ice. If you have similar, carefully defrost this, and check the drain hole at the bottom of the cavity.

Re-assemble, as reverse of above.

Mine's been trouble-free since doing this.

SOURCE: Hotpoint FFS70S fridge drain pipe blocks with frost

I have the same problem. Engineer said most likely problem with insulation and since pipe is moulded onto the back, it cannot be fixed easily. Defrosting is a temporary solution only. Luckily I kept extended warranty going, they are going to replace it with a new one.

I have the samo model with same problem!
Try to do defrosting 24 hours! You can remove the back cover of freezer (inside) and check is there ice on the evaporator (looks like a radiator) If ice is there you can defrost by hair dryer!
Check after, should be ok, but I have a bad news! You have defrost system problem like me.

Defrost timer

The defrost timer is part of the electronic control baord located on the back of the refrigerator. If the freezer is not defrosting check the thermistor on the evaporator(freezer) coils. It can cause the control board to thing it doesn'y need defrosting. a common problem

This is telling you that you have an automatic defrost problem.

Before I go on here the model number you passed appears to be a UK model.
63d99d9.jpg

The problem can be:

1. The defrost timer / control
2. The 60 deg F defrost bi-metal thermostat
3. Wiring
4. The defrost element.

Some info about the 5 year warranty is on page 11 of the owners manual: http://www.hotpoint.co.uk/hotpoint/_pdf/manuals/19506810502_UK.pdf

I do not locate the appliance parts manual for this unit as I am not in the UK.

Thanks for using FixYa.
