4 wheel drive is unfortunately a bit of a myth as in 4 wd any two wheels with no traction will not move you any where
so if you have both rh side wheels slipping,
go no where
left front right rear ,
going no where
the wheel that was not turning was the only wheel that had traction but through the differential action the other wheel spun faster
now with limited slip diff centers , both wheels have to turn as the differential action locks up so yes you would be going some where.
posi traction is the same idea
vehicles that have limited slip diffs are Toyota and Nissan as standard with some Nissans having limited slip diffs in the front drive axle as well
now if you are doing a lot of 4wd driving in adverse conditions , you need to have locker diff centers ( available from off road shops ) as they physically lock the diff actions ( with the flick of a switch) with the result if all 4 wheels are spinning and you are not moving , your stuck but if one wheel has traction you keep moving

Why 4x4 doesn't turn all 4 wheels at same time? 4hi-4lo

4X4 actually provides power to the front 2, and the back 2.
Unless the back has limited slip or posi-track, if 1 wheel spins, the other will not turn.
Since the front wheels have to turn at different rates to accomodate turning radius differences, there is (usually) to limited slip on the front differential, so if one wheel spins, the other will not turn.
So, if you have one front wheel spinning at the same time as one back wheel is spinning, and you don't have posi-trac, you're stuck.
Cheerfuls.

I have a 1995 gmc jimmy 4x4 4.3l and I am having problems with the 4x4 .ok here's what my problem is When ever I switch in 4 lo or 4 hi The 4 hi don't seem to engage And the 4 lo engages and the...

The actuator under the battery runs the engagement of the front Diff .If 4 - wheel low is working and high is not then that is a linkage adjustment problem at the transfer case or a internal problem with in the transfer case not the transmission . Those transfer case are not that expensive from a salavage yard if that ends up being your problem and they are not that hard to change ... Alot easier then the transmission

I just bought a 2000 Nissan Frontier and I'd like to know the correct way to shift on the fly into and out of 4WD? I don't want to mess it up. Also is it ok to use 4WD if pavement is just wet or will that...

you can shift on the fly from 2 hi to 4 hi at any time as long as you are not under power or in other words on the gas. Hold at a steady speed or let up on gas pedal a little bit then shift, DO NOT shift truck when vehicle is speeding up or taking off. Also do not shift when wheels are spinning or when you are turning a corner. The same goes for shifting from 4 hi to 2 hi. ** Now to shift into 4 lo the truck should be stopped and put trans shift into nuetral then shift transfercase into 4 lo, and never exceed 25 mph in 4 lo position !!!!!!! To shift out of 4 lo and go to 4 hi or 2 hi stop vehicle and shift trans into nuetral then make your 4x4 shift then put trans into forward or reverse gear and VROOOOOM your on your way. Remember to NEVER and i mean NEVER shift into 4 lo while vehicle is moving forward or reverse as you will do serious damage to any and all parts of drive train. You should not run 4x4 at all unless you need to pull something where you need extra traction like a boat out of water,a stuck vehicle,or if roads are slippery, or muddy. also don't be alarmed as sometimes when in 4 wheel drive and you turn corners you will notice a binding or jerking motion, this is normal and if this is occurring i would recommend going back to 2 hi position. HAPPY TRAILS to you with the new toy. I only buy vehicles with 4x4 and have never owned a 2 wheel drive in my 31 yrs of driving. I love the idea that i have extra power and traction options when i need it,the only bad thing is your boss says " what do you mean you can't make it in,you have a 4 wheel drive!

I have a 1997 5.7 Liter Cheverolet Z71. The 4 wheel drive is not engaging. I can hear the trasfer case engage and can even hear the difference in the transmission when in 4 Lo/hi when driving. However...

Having 4 wheel drive is not actually the case unless you have limited slip on both axles. Do you know if one wheel will spin on both axles. If you can't get either wheel to spin on the front axle and one will spin on the rear then I would agree your not getting front wheel drive. Since you can tell a difference between hi/lo the transfer case is definitely engaging

Stuck in 4 wheeldrive

Have you gotten a service light? Sometimes these electronic things just freak out. It might be as simple as a new switch. There is a motor on the transfer case that is responsable for moving the levers in the case that use to be done by a lever from inside the truck. I think it may be possible to remove this motor and replace it with a lever. I would check into this by calling a local 4x4 shop, or a mechanic that specializes in 4x4 vehicles.
