USB ports don't recognize memory sticks or external harddrive.

This is an HP desktop that has been very reliable for the last couple of years since its last upgrade. All of a sudden, all the USB ports don't recognize any memory sticks or external hard drive, but they work fine on other desktops and laptops. Also, other non-memory type of units I plug into this HP desktop work fine, its just memory type of units that don't work.

If your using a usb hub or similiar, try connecting directly to the front or the back of your machine.
Do you have another USB cable to try or is the usb connector directly on the USB device?

Try these steps to reinitialize your usb ports on your pc

1. Unplug ALL USB devices connected to the computer. If you are using a USB mouse and keyboard, temporarily use the older type PS/2 devices if you have them, if you don't then just leave them connected.

2. Hold down the windows key and press r

3. Type devmgmt.msc into the run menu and press ok

4. Click on the + sign next to the Universal Serial Bus Controllers

5. You might need another mouse to do this if you have a usb mouse.. I recommend you get a ps2 connector mouse which goes into the green round connector in the back of your pc.

6. Right click and uninstall first the usb root hubs. all of them then uninstall the rest of the devices you see under Universal serial bus controllers

7. Ones you have uninstalled everything you should see the Universal serial bus controllers there at all.

8. Now go ahead and restart your pc.

9. Ones you have restarted the pc your usb ports will reinstall in a moment stand by while it installs all of them. If you get warning messages click ok or continue installation.

10. Now go ahead and plug the usb devices back in. Install software if required, all usb devices if not faulty or broken should work now. Also note the error code if you get one?

This solution doesn't fix all usb problems so if you have a yellow ! mark there and device status reports a error code. Then it might not be a problem with your usb ports.

Set-up won't recognize that the USB cable is connected to both printer and computer and therefore printer won't work. What's up with that??

1. Confirm the USB port on the computer you are connecting your printer to is being recognized by your computer. The easiest way to do this would be to plug a known good USB Memory stick into the USB port you want to use. If you can read the contents of the USB Memory stick then the port should work. Remove the Memory stick, start the printer installation program (Make sure you don't the printer connected), want until the setup program tells you to connect the printer before you attach the Printer's USB cable.
If the printer isn't recognized try a different USB port, when picking a new USB port to try select a higher priority port, for example in increasing priority from, an external USB hub, a powered external hub, a monitor based hub, USB ports on the front of the computer, up to the USB ports at the computer rear. For USB ports on the same circuit select an USB 2.0 before an USB 3.0 port

SONY VAIO PCV R53 39 DS WON'T BOOT UP

Pull the harddrive out, install in an economical external enclosure.
The external enclosure has a USB cable.

Plug the USB cable into any available USB port, on a working computer.

Go to My Computer, or Computer; and double-click on the drive letter, that corresponds with the external enclosure.

(Actually with the harddrive in that external enclosure, it is now an external harddrive)

http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/model-home.pl?mdl=PCVR539DS&LOC=3#/howtoTab

It's an IDE harddrive. Also known as a PATA harddrive.

A harddrive is measured across it's width.
2-1/2 inches across is a laptop harddrive.
3.5 inches across is a desktop harddrive. (3-1/2 inches)

So you need a 3.5 IDE (PATA) external enclosure.

I have a new 500GB Iomega external harddrive. It is now loaded to near capacity with films etc. When I plug it into my USB port on my Sony TV it does not seem to be recognized. When I plug it into my...

1. The TV and drive may not be compatible with each other. 2. The formatting of the drive could be the problem. The USB memory stick would be formatted as FAT32, but the Iomega drive would have been formatted as NTFS. Maybe the TV can only read drives formatted as FAT32 and not NTFS.

New Dell desktop can't recognize external hard drive

I devised these simple steps that tend to remedy quite a few issues with most USB portable / external hard drives and devices (though not always)

A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especialy true if you move a HUB to another port

If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further

External harddrive

yea this is a hard one you will need a recovery program something good that will go in deep and find all the shadow programs on your (HDD) Hard drive. if your computer does not recognize this HDD or memory stick this means u have reformatted a computer and the HDD or memory stick has been taken out half way through the format process. if you get a recovery program this means u will not get everything off it will only take the shadows of all your programs and files.

I hope this helps
