Model PL81. Why does it zoom, beep, and shut down?

Are you positive that the battery is good? Turning on for a few seconds and then shutting down is a classic symptom of a battery that did not take a proper charge and as soon as the surface charge is used, unit will shut down. And what if your charger is not properly charging the battery?

If you have a battery eliminator try that in lieu of the battery to see what happens.

My garmin nuvi 255 turns on for a few seconds after the start up screen then shuts right off

It simply means the device is not properly charged, that is why it is not powering on beyond the start up screen. This problem only comes up when the battery is not properly charged, therefore not being able to power up the gps beyond the loading map page. Try to reset the unit by holding the power button for about 15 seconds, it will restart the unit, once it restarts it, check if it will get pass the loading map page. Then you try to back up the software on a computer, format it and restore the software back on the unit. If that does not help, then you carry out the following tests.

Try to charge the gps device for about 2 hours then try to turn it on. If it does not come on, then it means the battery did not get charged. That can be a problem from either the battery or the charger or the charging port.

First test the battery by fixing it in another gps and charging it for about 2 hours then turn it on. If it powers on the gps, then it means the battery is okay, but if it does not turn it on, then it means the battery is weak and cannot hold a charge and the solution is for you to replace the battery.

Next you test the charger by trying it out on another gps device, if it turns it on, then it means the charger is intact but if it does not turn it on, then the fault is from the charger.

Finally, test the gps itself by trying to charge in by connecting it to the computer using the USB cable, then you turn it on, if it does not come on, then it means there is a problem with the connection port or there is an internal problem or something with the unit.

Hope this advice was useful to you.

The gps automatically shuts off after few minutes

When you turn the unit on and get to the screen showing Where To?, View Map and Travel Kit look on the upper right hand corner of the display and make sure you see the battery icon all green. If it is not then the battery is not charged

Tom tom won't turn off

if it does not proceed when the icon is selected, presume data corruption or in fact no data.
TomTom is renouned for this type of problem.
try rteinstalling the map data from the source.

try a reset first ( small pinhole on rear) put open paperclip end in and gently push the button inside) if this still fails then data installation is the go

Garmin Street Pilot 7200 will not load maps

I had the same problem on my StreetPilot 7200 after many edits of many routes. Suspect a scratchpad memory heap getting used up or fragmented had to hold the power button in for 15 seconds or until a message that says press yes to clear all data appears then quickly press yes before unit shuts down
This corrected the problem until the next time the heap gets fragmented but loss of all waypoints is the downside
