just got home from work, i just turned it to where it clicked off. im going to give it 25 minutes and see what it does. how soon should i hear the sizzling? i used to hear that noise, but i actually havent heard it do that lately. just in case this isnt it, what else could it be? im guessing the defrost thermostat or the actual heater? how can i test the two of them to see, if its not the timer? thank you so much!!

Sorry to get back late to you. Fixya is having a problem with notifications to me and peoples response to solutions. Your refrigerator has a defrost timer inside the fresh food compartment.

Part number 5303917634 You will possibly find a hole in the plastic cover inside the fresh food section. The hole may have plastic plug in it to hide the hole. I want you to pull the plug out of the hole and use a flathead screwdriver and turn slowly clockwise until the compressor stops. Leave it there for up to 30 minutes. The refrigerator should restart on its own after about 25 minutes. If not the tier must be replaced. The timer has a clock that makes the freezer defrost every 8 to 10 hours every day. If defective this is the most likely reason for the frost buildup. You can order the part by clicking the red parts and model search feature below. Enter the part number or model number and the search will take you to all parts related to your model. During the 25 minutes off you should hear a sizzle or cracking noise as the defrost begins to work. Let me know what you find. And please rate me thanks, Sea Breeze

Your defrost heater may be burned out. It is located behind the wall inside the back of the freezer. Part number 215810800 and goes around the evaporator coil. This is the part that heats up to melt the ice. You can check it after the freezer coils have been defrosted with a hair drier. You will need to unplug the refrigerator first and then take one wire off the end of the heater and use an OHM meter to test the continuity through both ends. Would be better to change the defrost thermostat while you are in there because it cannot be tested when it reaches 50 degrees F. Part number for the 5303917954 Defrost Thermostat. You can get these parts through my sites or whoever you choose. Just enter the part number into the mode and part number search feature. Also I am not being notified by Fixya when you make comment. There is somthing wrong with their system and the know about it. If you ask a question here send me an email so I can answer you soon. I'm having to go through all my solutions and look for people that responded. My email is appliancepartsse@yahoo.com

I have a ge model GSS20DBMB WW side by side fridge freezer. I have replaced the freezer door seal and we still have to use a hair dryer to defrost the coils every few days! What part should I replace?

What causes the coils behind the panel in the freezer to freeze up and stop the freezer fan? top half of freezer defrosts, lower half stays cold.Fridge is side by side and freezer fan keeps turning of

When the evaporator fan motor stops running the top half of the back wall of the freezer will frost over and the the only reason the lower portion stays cool is because cold air falls. More than likely you have a a dc motor fan and its bad, but be wary with ge, the main control board could also go bad causing the fan not to run.

Fridge section not cooling enough but freezer OK

Is the fan blowing in the freezer section? Also, check to see if you have airflow thru the damper (vent) in the frig section.

Freezer keeps freezing up. But the fridge doesn't stay cool.

the reason the fridge doesnt stay cool is because the freezer keeps icing up, try defrosting the freezer and try cleaning the condensor coils and this may help.

Side by side fridge , freezer will not defrost

It is most likely a defrost heater or termination thermostat. they are located behind the freezers back panel

Control board has gone bad....

What happens is the defrost is controlled electronically from a circuit board, when this goes bad, the freezer quits defrosting, and freezes the fans that circulate air through the fridge side of things.

To check this, unplug the entire fridge, leave the freezer open, wait for it to defrost a bit, if this causes the fridge to start cooling again when you plug it back in, then its the defrost. You should also see ice crystals on the back of the freezer just under the icemaker.
