First of all, thank you very much for choosing FIXYA today for your technical support needs.
I'm Joe, and I will be more than happy to assist you with your service request.
In order to properly assist you with this particular problem I will need to know the exact brand and model number of your microwave oven. Could you please COMMENT back here to this page with this additional information and I will be more than happy to provide you with all the help you need.
You can usually find the model number of the unit printed on a sticker on the very back outside panel of the oven. Otherwise, look inside the door frame of the microwave for an information sticker which should be visible once you open the oven door.
Be sure to use the small blue ADD A COMMENT button located just below the text of this solution to leave your additional comments for me and I will respond right away to help you.
The magnetron (the part that heats the food) may be bad or the circuitry to the magnetron may have burned out. Basically my advice is that if you have no electrical expertise, it isn't worth fixing. The magnetron if bad, costs almost as much as a new microwave. If you open it up (make sure it has been unplugged for a few hours and don't seen any obvious burnt parts, then most likely the magnetron is done and a new microwave is the way to go.
Does the magnetron come on when you hit your settings to cook/warm/etc? You'll know that unmistakeable sound of a whirring/blowing fan and a "hum". Plus when the magnetron cycles on and off, you'll notice the light inside the microwave dim and get brighter in accordance with the cycling.
IF the magnetron's not coming on then you're looking at servicing it. If you're electrically inclined, there's a relay and a really big diode that is in the circuit with the magnetron. A meter will tell you if the diode's open (if you can get to it - sometimes manufacturers will epoxy over the connections to keep you out and make you gop to them for service).
It sounds looks like there is problem with the model number for your GE microwave. However the handle will usually involve taking the door apart. I can supply you with a breakdown diagram but i would need a proper model number off the microwave itself.
the most likley problem is the magnetron has gone bad.but there are a couple of thermal sensor in the cabinet that need to be checked. one of those could be bad as well.
One would think that you would have the sense to use the extractor that is above your stove and under your microwave, would you use a laptop in a sauna!!! no wonder the thing is shorting out. Contact the person who fitted the microwave. always use the extractor when you boil things on the hob. I live in England it is illegal to have a microwave above a hob for this exact reason. America will catch up eventually with building regulations!!
This is either a bad primary interlock (bottom door switch) or a defective electrolytic capacitor on the circuit board (smart board).
I would suspect the switch first, but the buzzing would make me suspect the capacitor, too. It could be both, but one thing at a time.
I would suggest that you or a friend check the door switch and its mount.
If it's not that, we regularly repair such control units for
customers nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a
week with a one-year guarantee.
At
our Web site, we have a video
available showing how to remove a typical
over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.
There
should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit
behind the
control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is
very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.
You can usually find
helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full
model number here.
If a switch is all you
need, we offer a universal type for only $5 postpaid which you can
order here.
Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your
full model number) for more information & help.
We're
happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your
thoughtful rating of our answer.
1.Check power outlet for working.
2.If it is than you have broken fuse inside the m/w.
3. To change the fuse you have to disconnect the power to m/w, take the upper grill off, take the screw on top of control panel, lift the control panel up and removed. The 20 Am fuse located behind this panel.
I don't like to pass on your problem but it sounds very much like either the high voltage supply ot the magnetron has bit the dust.
Either one would make the repair marginal at best.
This is apparently not a very good unit, many microwaves jsut kind of fade away as their magnetron emissions decay.
This one seems to have a bad rep. look at this link:
