Well I have the same phone as you, I got it 1 month ago. I was realizing the me battery life went down realized the my battery life went really fast. I called my phone server and they said "You can't change the brightness but if you go under settings-themes-select theme-themes-light.nth. That will make our screen darker. Then go under Display-wallpaper-choose a photo that is black and white. It will make your scream darker and will save battery life, plus lower the brightness" hope that helped.
You should have a Fn button on your laptop, and pressing that, combined with the button that has a sun on it should raise your screen brightness, if your screen only has one brightness setting, and it got much darker all of a sudden, your LCD lamp probably went out, in which case it is probably better to buy a new laptop, because those are expensive to replace.
I am not sure...but I have the identical problem. I believe the vertical lines are caused by the inverter board and the darkness is caused by the one of the back lights that needs to be replaced. I am tearing my unit apart now and will find out.
this is a light engine problem and it is a recall for toshiba. Call them and they need to give u a new light engine.....even though u will have other problems after they do that.
