Question about Refrigerators

Refrigerator not cooling adequately

The temperature in the refrigerator section of my c. 25 year old side by side refrigerator is now 46-48 degrees at the coldest setting. The repairman could find no problem when he checked the freezer section and underneath. Is this a safe range? If not, is it fixable, or should I just get a new refrigerator?

The answer to the temperature range is NO. It should be 36-40. Could the thermostat be faulty? Are the doors sealing properly? Is the interior light remaining on, when the door/s are closed? Open the door and depress the door switch. See if the light goes out? Being 25 years old, technology has come a long way. Purchasing a new unit wouldn't be a bad idea.

Temperature settings 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 means

refrigerator dial settings work from hot + 5 degrees (5) to real cold (1) 0 degrees and in the freezer section they work in the opposite direction (1) is cool - is minus 5 degrees and ( 5) is minus 25 degrees
those figures are example figures to show how the temperature in the units will be in relation to the dial numbers

The freezer on my Kenmore Elite Trio has stopped freezing. All my food is thawing. How do I set the freezer temperture at the coldest setting?

If the temperature is the problem this could be the solution

Problems with Temperature
If the refrigerator or freezer is not cooling properly, check temperature settings and air vents and ensure there is adequate room for proper airflow. Factory-recommended temperature settings are 0 degrees Fahrenheit (-18 degrees Celsius) for the refrigerator; and 37 degrees Fahrenheit (3 degrees Celsius) for the freezer.
If you need to adjust the temperature, do it one degree at a time and wait 24 hours before making additional adjustments. Check the air vents and make sure nothing is blocking them. Finally, if your refrigerator or freezer is too full, there will not be adequate room for air to circulate and cool properly. If these all check out, the problem could be with one or more compressor components and will require professional repair.

Hope this will help you.

It could be a problem depending on how cold your garage gets in the winter. Most refrigerators depend on the compressor turning on to cool the freezer section and that cold air is used to cool the refrigerator section. If your the temperature in your garage gets in the 30-40 degree range in the winter. The compressor may not turn on sufficiently since the refrigerator is typically around the 35-40 degree range. This will cause the freezer to warm up to the fridge temperature and your freezer items will defrost.

I'm not familiar with your unit, but sounds like condenser problems. Check for a dirty coil on the backside or underneath the unit. Also, if it has a fan for that coil, make sure it's running when the compressor is running and that the blades are clean. Other than that, it could have developed a refrigerant leak.

Profile refrigerator section not cooling

We are not sure what precipitated the temperature swing up; however, within about an hour of emptying quite a lot of foodstuffs from top and bottom sections of the unit, I felt the cold air start to flow out of the rear vent. Within two hours, the upper section had dropped to about 50 degrees and by the next morning to 36. The freezer seemed to recoved on its own too, having risen to almost 8 degrees and then recovering to 0. Just patience and a smaller food payload?
