John Deere 265 starting problem

I mowed about an hour and a half and it sputtered and died exactly like it just ran out of gas(because Ive had this mower 3 years and I do that on a regular basis) but the tank was more than half full - I removed the filter and blew thru it and removed the pump , completly disassembled it and cleaned it - I put everything back together and used starting fluid to prime it and it fired right up and ran smooth like nothing was ever wrong......for about 10 mins. - Today, I took off the seat/fender assy. and removed the tank and cleaned it out, blew thru the hose to the filter, blew thru the hose to the carb ,blew thru the pump and cleaned out the little hole for the diaphram - I used some more satrting fluid and it fired right up and ran for another 2 hours beautifully and then out of nowhere it died again - I did another blow thru and put a new fuel filter on and fired it up again with starting fluid and it ran fine again for about 15mins. this time - Ive spent more time under this thing than on it this summer - I know its close to 20 years old now but its such a great mower - What is its friggin' problem ???

To start ensure that is not a carb problem, and that the engine is not chocking because of incorrect carburetor settings. The carb should also taken apart and cleaned.

Try also running the engine without fuel tank cap, if engine runs fine replace the tank cap.

if carburetor, fuel filter, tank and fuel lines are ok it may be a faulty fuel pump failing. To test the fuel pump, insert a pressure gauge tool like this in the lines out from fuel pump.

Regards.

Still having issues with mower. Took it to John Deere and it ran like a champ. Took it home to mow and it stops after 2 min. I am baffled. I have replaced the spark plug and Coil

You need two things to run a gas engine. Spark and gas. If you had a spark problem, it wouldn't likely die after 2 minutes, so probably gas. Either the carb float is set wrong, or (very possibly) the fuel filter is clogged. (Or something really simply like a crimped gas line). Ps... If it uses an inline gas filter and it's made of plastic, and it's too close to the exhaust, it could melt closed.

I'm not sure of the model number of your mower or engine to know the fuel and carburetor set up. I do have one easy thing to try though as it sounds as if a vacume is building up in the tank. Try putting a half of tank of gas in it, leave the gas cap off, and see if it continues as it was or if it runs ok. If this stops the issue your cap vent is pluged up. I hope this helps

The valves DO NEED adjusting every 250 to 300 hours of service. That is why it dies out beleive me. It is not that hard to do if you have a service manual to help you along to perform this task

It sounds like the seat switch is disconnected or failed. Check it out. If it thinks there is no **** on the seat it will cause your symptoms.

Sputtering Mower

It might not be disengaging the mower deck all the way off. I had this problem on an older model.
