Hi Themba,
You must be aware of the risks associated with performing one's own repairs/maintenance, before deciding on carrying out such actions. Manufacturers usually void your warranty once you start opening up their products. No-one but you will assume full responsibility for your actions.. if you are okay with that, you can find a video that shows how you may go about doing what you wish to do(& more) here:

My IOMEGA model MDHD360-UE external hard drive is not working. I cannot access the data. It turns on but the computer is not reading it.

I also have an iomega external drive different from yours and has a switch or a button. If you have that switch or button, please try to press it and see if it resets. If not we have two things to consider.
1. Try to use a different USB Cable and test.
2. Open the external harddrive and replace the disk with a spare one or working one. Then test if it connects. a. If it does not connect then the problem is the electronic board of the external harddrive. Buy a Harddrive enclosure so as you could still use and retrieve your valuable data. Or slave the drive on your desktop computer and see if its connect. b. If it connects then you have a faulty harddrive. I hope you have a backup of what you have there.

Forget the password and i need my data

Hi,

Do you have a hard drive enclosure? Just take out the harddrive from your laptop, put it in the enclosure (consider if the harddrive is sata or ide when purchasing a harddrive enclosure) and connect to another computer. It will work like an external harddrive and you will be able to access your files.

Hope this helps. Just leave a message for any questions or clarifications. Thanks.

The screen was cracked, I had it replaced and now it is saying no hard disk its a compaq laptop

Go to BIOS and check whether the harddrive is detecte in BIOS.If it is not detected then the harddrive is either missing or there is a problem with the hard drive connection.Reconnecting the same may resolve the issue

Operating system not found

I would say either a bad harddrive or bad boot sector. If you are looking for a DIY solution, youll want to test the harddrive by running disk wizard or something similar or pulling the harddrive and putting it in a harddrive enclosure (available from NewEgg.com). The enclosure will hookup to another computer through usb or firewire and will allow you to backup your files if the harddrive is still good. If the harddrive isnt good, youll get errors while copying the files or it wont allow you to access the harddrive at all. Else, take it to a computer repairman to have them pull the harddrive and run tests on it.

Not finding operating system during boot

Check its connection first for loose. Check if the harddrive is still recognizable and working. It could be some corruption. If it can access in DOS mode.

But the most possible thing could happen is your harddrive needed a replacement.

this might start by some virus which have put an autorun file on ur harddrive. the best option to fix this problem is just format the harddrive or the partion on which u r having this problem. or else u have to searchon ur harddrive that weather there is any autorun.ini file is prset or not if it is there then just delete it.

I have a major virus cuasing trouble with most my programs being able to update including my anti-virus software and windows updates, i cant download anything either because i get a message about...

If you have access to another computer with internet access, make sure that computer has the most upto date antivirus and malware scanners installed and slave your harddrive to it. As a slave you will be able to scan your harddrive without initialising your copy of Windows and therefore not initialising the virus on your harddrive.

Acer 2420

It sounds like your hard drive is crashing. You should run diagnostics. You can find out what manufacture makes your hardrive by looking at the label. It appears to me that the harddrive is accessible through a door on the bottom of the laptop underneath where your right palm would sit if you were typing. There are harddrive diagnostics listed by manufacturer at the URL below. http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 If the harddrive test fails you should replace the harddrive. Andy TechSack.com
