Question about Hayward 1.5 Hp Northstar High Performance Pump

1 Answer

The pump motor is a two speed 1.5 h.p.. It was factory set for 240 and I had only 110. Technician said we could eliminate one wire and this would accomplish the switch. The motor continually shuts on and off and it would seem to me the problem may be the elimination of the three wire hookup. The faceplate shows the wiring for both 220 and 110. I beleive there should be a method for complete wiring for all three wires and still be in 110 mode. Is there a color coded wiring diagram available ?

Your three wire system was 115V? I assume then it was Line, neutral, and ground and you would hook the Line and neutral to the motor line posts and the ground to the ground post.

You also need to be sure to reset the motor from the 230 volt to the 115 volt setting to match the line voltage you are supplying.

Electricity is "Color Blind" it does not care what color wire is used!
3 wires normally is a single speed motor, where 4 wires would indicate a 2 speed motor.

Now, if you had someone connect the motor with NO ground, I guess you would have a very unsafe 2 speed motor wiring setup???

It would be very difficult to assist you without actually seeing the application.

But I will presume you also have a "Green" wire since you stated: "More than 3 connections"

  • Green wire is normally/usually Ground. Ground wire is always securely mounted to the casing of the motor with a green screw.
  • White wire is usually a Common/Neutral. Neutral wire will go onto the Common position or sometimes it is labeled as Line1/L1/LN1
  • Black wire is usually a Speed wire. On a 1 speed motor, Black wire is a Line wire. A Line/Hot wire is connected to Line2/L2/LN2 position
  • Red wire is usually an indication that there is an additional speed so therefor an additional Line/Hot wire is required. An additional Hot/Line wire will "Alternate" with the other Hot/Line wire. or "SeeSaw/TeeterTotter" between the 2 hot lines.
    • These type of motors will have a label indicating where the Line/Hot wires will go and will be labeled as "High/H or Low/L"
    • You will need to know, and only you will be able to know this, or any technician at your site, will be able to know. No one will be absolutely able to tell you which wire is High Speed or which wire is Low Speed. e.g. "Red wire is Low Speed" is something you will not hear from me or any other person assisting. We would be able to tell you that normally this brand/manufacturer of spa uses the red wire for Low Speed, but that may not be the case for you!
  • But if you have a red wire, and a black wire, and there is definitely a green wire, then your red & black wires are Line/Hot wires and is possibly a 2 speed pump motor and they will be placed on the High & Low positions. White will be common and the green will be attached to motor casing - Usually!
  • Remember, electricity does not care what color wires are used! So, if somebody who did not know what they were doing, re-wired something down the road and/or did not know "Usual" colors for identification purposes then Color of wire is of no use.
Good Luck

check for 230v not 110 (on line to ground). SO checking L1 and L2 should show 230 v if not you have a fault in the timer or the breaker is toast. depending on the timer you can clean the points

The motor will not come on everyday like it is suppose to. You can cut the breaker off and turn in on again and hit start and it will work fine until the next day. Control panel was replaced about six...

To protect the IntelliFlo pump electronics from damage due to freezing conditions, the pump will switch itself on to generate internal heat when the air temperature drops below 40° F. This feature is not intended to protect the system plumbing from freezing. The pump will run at a lower speed than what you have it set, unless you have programmed the adjustment.
The Intelliflow pumps are great pumps, but come at a disadvantage- A whole lot of electronics.; Since the intelliflow pumps are fairly newer in the market, and you have already had the electronics replaced recently, so I am going to presume that you still are under Pentair Manufacturer warranty.
The issue you are describing remains a problem with the electronics. Since you are not getting any alarm codes, there may be in issue in the wiring or you may have a defective pump. Before calling into the manufacture, lets reset the pump to factory defaults:
The IntelliFlo VS-3050 pump can be reset to the factory default settings. All previously adjusted pump speeds that were saved will be erased. To reset the pump to the factory default settings: 1. Ensure that the pump is powered on and the green power LED is on. 2. Press the Stop button to stop the pump. 3. Press and hold all of the four Speed buttons simultaneously for four seconds. Power off the drive and reenergize. The default settings will be in effect.
If this solves your issues, then you can program the pump to operate at the desired time/speeds.
If you are still having issues, I recommend contacting Pentair Warranty at 800-831-7133. Be sure to have the date of install, the Serial and Model numbers handy when you call.

I have a mt2000-h magnum pump, but did not get the controlls with the pump. Im trying to figure out how to get the two speeds out of the motor when i only have one set of motor leads for the 220v hook up....

You have two windings if it is two speed. What you need is a switch
before your wires come into the motor you need to take one of the leads and run it through a high low switch. This will simply take one of your 110v lines and make it go to high and low speed on the motor.
Green will go to ground, one 110v line will go to common and the other goes to the switch. It comes out as two leads. One will hook up to the low speed terminal and the other will hook to the high speed terminal in the back of the motor.

The side of the motor will have a wiring diagram for how to connect the common, low and high speed leads. Your wire harness should have a white (common), black (usually low), red (usually high) and green (ground) wire. If high and low are backwards, switch the black and red leads.

Wiring difficulties during hookup

The side of the motor will have a diagram showing how to connect the wires for common high and low speeds. There should also be a voltage selector device on near the terminals you connect your line wires to. Set that device to the 115 setting and you should be all set.

Motor wsurges on and off only one speed was purchased as 2 speed

Do NOT listen to your 'technician'. Is the motor rated for both 115 and 230 or just 230? If it says both voltages on the nameplate it will also tell you how to reset the motor for 115. Follow those directions and you should be all set.
