You don't say what car? If its hydraulic operation it may need more fluid and bleeding to get going, but find the leak for the fluid whilst you're at it.
If its mechanical, ie a cable then replace the cable. Most cars with a cable system have a self adjust mechanism either under the dash where the pedal pivot is or at the trans end.
