What kind of hard drive IDE, SCSI, SATA?
When was the last time the pc worked?
Have you noticed any possible virus that could destroy your hd?

Try to boot the pc with your OS cd, by placing on the cd drive. And select System recovery to bring your system up.

Go into BIOS and check to see if your HD is being detected.
If you don't know how to access BIOS go here and look up your PC information
or
Open the machine and see physically if your HD is connected.

select the primary hard drive as the first boot device, or if you dont have option for this in BIOS, it means that your system boot from the primary drive as default

Had a external hd pluged in and had shut the laptop up and later when I upened it back up to use it, it would not boot and said it had no bootable disk

remove the external hd before turning bakc the system on, it might be trying to boot up to the ext hard drive if the internal hard drive is not the primary boot device on your computer. go to the BIOS set up of your system then change the boot sequence make hdd as the primary boot device so you can use the ext hard drive even if after reboot.

Hard Drive won't boot Windows

yes.. because the booting information and booting files are sored only in active primary partition of a hard drive. i.e primary drive. if you remove the primary it wont recognize the OS with out booting information. you should need to reinstall OS.

No boot device available

Make sure all the connections to the Hard Drive are tight and secure. Then see if it will boot. If not then try loading a windows cd and see if it detects the Hard drive. If it does not the hard drive is no good if it does try running the automated system recovery you may have a corrupt MBR file.

Barracuda hard disk 80gb

More than likely, since you say you did a DOS install of the OS, you did not set the FDISK parameters to set your primary drive. Insert the DOS CD you used to format the system. Boot to a DOS prompt and run the FDISK command. It should have an option, I believe it is number 2 or 3 to "Set primary drive". Select your hard disk 0 as this drive and you should be fine at rhat point.
