See that link for the beginning of the Dell troubleshooting wizard for diag lights 3 & 4, it is in fact a memory subsystem error. Usually meaning the stick of memory in the first slot is bad. The wizard will walk you through this, but try removing the first stick and using the second stick in the first bay and see if it will boot. Unfortunately no recalls on RAM for this model but the good news is that your memory is cheap and if your not under your service contract you can buy a set on newegg or a similar site for about 50 bucks.

Diag lights 3 & 4 refer to a memory subsystem error. 9 times out of 10 it is the RAM itself, but in somecases it can be the motherboard that needs to be replaced, I have seen the memory bus go out on these models before.

Hi Zany913,

3 and 4 solid green lights indicate that the memory is detected but there is an error. First reseat the memory modules. Then try one at a time.

If nothing happens, I'm afraid you'll need to call dell for replacement RAM.

I hope this helps,

This sounds like a Ram memory issue...if you are sure that you installed all proper devices..on ...and the Ram memory is compatible should remove the bios battery to restore it to initial settings ...and try to install the pc..again ..cause it has no way to boot with the old settings on hdd...but first it has to boot till the bios..or at least to show you the devices bet is on the Ram memory ..its either incompatible or something is not well powered up..take the blue print and chek ir again ...let me know more about what you've done see what might beem wrong ...

A good way to troubleshoot is to back track the steps you did, review each of the questions below:

Do you have the pc connected to a monitor, any display message?

Any sound that generates as beeps?

Power supply cable connected to the motherboard correctly?

Hard drive IDE cable conntected with pin 1 (red strip) into the motherboard correctly?

Memory modules tightly connected on the DIMM with a snap sound?

Processor chip properly place accordingly on the motherboard with pin 1?

Hope this isn't too late for you.

As a matter of fact, I have a 5150 that was doing the same thing you describe. I replaced the front card as you did, along with the ribbon cable and even the power supply. After talking with a good computer guy, he agreed it was the motherboard. I got one on eBay for about $100. That was a little expensive, but it solved the problem. The computer has been up for about 3 weeks now with no problems.

You will have to decide if you think it is worth it since some new systems can be had for only $400-$500 dollars.

Hope this helps. Please take a moment to rate this solution.

Thanks for using Fixya.

I have a Dell Dimension 5150 which has recently been taken out of storage to use again. It hasn't been used for a minimum of 2 years. Before it being put away it worked fine. The motherboard light is...

This is one of 3 possible problems. Either your motherboard has gone bad, your power supply has gone bad, or the connections from the power supply to the motherboard are not secure.

Hi is the Power supply on a 2006 Dimension 5150

What makes you think you have a dead power supply? I would look at the connectors and see if there are 20 or 24 going into the Motherboard main connector. Then look for a 4 pin connector plugging in near the CPU. If it looks like the mounting holes line up, you have a winner. Most are interchangeable anyhow. Try to get some SATA connections on your new one.

Dell Dimension 5150 Boot Problems!

You can probably try two things here.

1) Go to the BIOS and reset the defaults.
2) Clear NVRAM from your Dell computer. Here is how you do it.

My Dimension 5150 box will not turn on! Just blinks, looks like an orange light. Monitor comes on then goes off to orange...

- disconnect the power cable of the box from the back of the tower and press and hold down the power button for 10 seconds (remaining power will be depleted).
- Now try using a different wall outlet.
- Check the diagnostic lights to see if the specific problem is identified (the computer has four diagnostic lights labeled "1," "2," "3," and "4" on the front panel). Also, see "Power Problems" in your computer Owner's Manual and/or Service Manual.

Dell dimension 5150 blinking amber lights

I have similar problem these days. After normal shutting down the PC, it can not be powered up again, the amber light blinks. A temp solution for my case is by doing these steps:

1. leave all monitor, network, keyboard and mouse etc. connected
2. disconnect the power, wait until green light and amber light dim.
3. pop up the CMOS battery, then put back in (better to check its remaining voltage, if not good, change a new one)
4. power amber light flash shorter and lighter
5. disconnect any USB connections like keyboard and mouse,
6. immediately connect keyboard and mouse back into USB ports
7. my pc powers up at this point, all green lights shining. Except it displays CMOS setup warnings, give me options to click either F1 or F2
8. I click F1, it goes into normal login XP

The only problem is I could not shutdown PC again, if I do, then I have to repeat 1-8. I have to use "Standby" instead, which I usually do.
