Canon digital IXUS 400. The lens will not retract. When turn on the monitor lights up after bleep , it then bleeps again, E18 appears in the left hand corner and then it powers off. The lens remains...

Hello

The problem is that the lens has become stuck in the barrel. There are some DIY solutions you could try, but the probability is that you will have to get it fixed by a professional.

Use these at own risk as it may further damage the camera.

Firstly , try connecting your ac adapter or usb cable.

Try holding the shutter button while switching on the camera.

Look at the lens , and if some of the lens 'circles' is misaligned or not concentric then try wiggling it (while holding camera lens down).

Try gently pushing or pulling the lens when it extends but this is risky as it may cause the lens barrel to slip out of its guidance system.

Another way to do this is to place the camera lens down on a hard surface and then power it up. Be sure to use a soft cloth or something similar as to not scratch your lens or casing. Let the lens push the camera up and down a few times and sometimes the little resistance provided by the camera is enough to get things going again.

Try hitting your camera near the lens on the body with the soft tissue on the palm of your hand.

Other than that , I would take the camera to a repair center for a evaluation to see if it would cost more to repair than to replace the camera.

If it is still under warranty I would suggest you take it in before trying any of these steps and remove any off-brand batteries or accessories as some stores are really fussy about warranty repairs on camera's with non-brand accessories.

You can also have a look at THIS link.

Hope the advise is useful. please do not hesitate to let me know if you need any further assistance.

The zoom lens is not opening and it writes error 18

Sometimes the lens is just stuck, sometimes it needs to be replaced. Try to mechanically move the lens in and out by gently twisting, pushing and pulling. If that fails, the gears are too misaligned to repair it without opening it.

If you're out of warranty, there are third party place that replace them such as camera lens repairs.

If you want to do it yourself, there are also free camera repair guide websites that show you how to replace the lens, the replacement part is usually available on ebay.

Hi there, I was taking photos with a 3 years old canon ixus 70 and suddenly the screen became black!! from then taking picture was impossible it comes out black too. All the menu buttons work properly,...

First verify that your camera is actually an SD500 (takes SD cards) and not an S500 (takes CF cards). If your camera is actually an S500, this would probably be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free worldwide, and may also include free shipping both ways (free shipping varies with countries). This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check this link for more info.

Applicable cameras include:
A40, A60, A70, A75, A80, A85, A95, A300, A310, S1 IS, S60, S200, S230, S330, S400, S410, S500, SD100, SD110, IXUS V2/V3/300/400/430/500/II/IIs, IXY Digital 200a/300a/320/400/450/500/30/30a

Now if your camera is indeed an SD500, a stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open).

To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

Stuck lens

The lens needs to be repaired or replaced. Could be one of several problems, sand, impact damage, broken gears. A professional camera repair shop should be able to do this for a reasonable price.

SD200 E18 Error

E18 is the error that comes when when the lens is stuck, so if the lens is stuck out, turn off the camera, carefully turn the lens until you hear a small clicking noise, then turn it on. I had the exact same problem, and that fixed it for me

Camera will take pictures but they are all black.

Your CCD is damaged, OR your aperture is stuck closed in your lens. Turn on the camera, have the lens extended and look into it, do you see a small circle at the bottom that looks like an opening? If not your aperture is stuck and you need a new lens. If its open, your CCD is bad and needs to be replaced. www.darntoothysam.com
