You didn't mention the error message when you try these procedures! The simple procedure for restoring is START--ALL PROGRAMS--ACCESSORIES--SYSTEM TOOLS--SYSTEM RESTORE....RESTORE MY SYSTEM TO AN EARLIER TIME. Which drive are you trying to format? If it's the one on which Windows is loaded then you need an OS installation disk so that you can install while formatting your drive,if it's the other drive then you need a third party software use Kill Disk http://www.killdisk.com/ erase your data and simply do the formatting. If this doesn't solve your problem then let me know with the correct error message.

T22 disk read error

Sounds like the Operating System is corrupt. I would re-format the hard drive and re-install the OS that should solve the problem. If not then the Hard drive needs to be replaced.

I have an IBM ThinkPad 2861that displays "operating system not found" during start up. I downloaded a user manual that wasn't much help in solving the problem. Any advice?

message means there is no working operating system(OS) installed on the harddisk, like windows XP,vista or a lunix version. if you have a working cd-rom, i use a win 98 install cd that boots from startup then install win98 to find out if there are any hardware issues. if the invalid OS was a version that used the NTFS file system the drive will have to be re-formatted/erased to install win98. if you have a bootable cd-rom version of the OS you use or if the factory IBM restore partition is intact you can use them. they may not save any data you have on the drive. if you have data you need to retrive from the disk drive it is a different procedure.

I hav licensed os in my thinkpad how to restore of

You can format-it and install-it again with the serial number from your backside of laptop. You should have one with Windows XP or something. Install from any windows cd and use your serial key. After that you have to activate your windows and make the updates.

Operating system corrupted

Hello,
If you had bought your OS, then you would probably be having the bootable OS CD with you.
It is very simple to format your system.
Follow these steps,
1. Restart your system and go to setup by clicking the F2 key.
2. In the setup, go to boot sequence and place BOOT FROM CD at the top of the list. save changes and exit from setup.
3. Now insert the OS CD in your drive and restart the system. The system will now start from the CD.
4. This will take you to the XP setup from where you would be asked to partition the harddisk for formating the OS.
5. follow the steps given by the setup and you have your new formatted OS.
Good luck!

Your computer may simply be unable to run 2 operating systems. On the odd occasion the main OS usually the newest one in this case vista is running in the background and interfering with kernel operations even if you have selected "Previous version of windows" the 1 and only solution i know of is to not only re-format XP but Vista also.

the website above MIGHT be able to find driver needed but i dont think it is a driver problem.
This may be the only way- do this first

Think pad r40/2681(driver prob.i.e. usb/wireless/sound etc.)

Go to the IBM/Lenovo WEB site - support/download page and download the latest Windows XP or Vista device drivers for your model laptop,
You need to use a computer that has Internet access to download and transfer the files to your computer.
