SOURCE: the top thread keep breaking. should the tension

Thread breakage is usually due to the needle in backwards, upper tension too tight or old/weak thread.

When replacing the needle, make sure that the flat side is to the right (3 o'clock position) and is pushed all of the way up before tightening.

What brand and weight of thread are you using and are you sewing with the foot or free motion sewing?

What is normal tension settings on a kenmore model 158.12112

The tension depends on what you are sewing but usually a 4 -5. Also make sure thread and needle are the correct size for the materials you are sewing. and make sure needle and bobbin are threaded correctly and that needle is not, blunt or bent. :)

Kenmore mini ultra The top thread breaks off from needle after a few stitches. The bobbin seems to Be catching the top thread. Thank you. ??

If the top thread sews a few inches and then breaks, something is catching the top thread and holding it until it breaks. Usually, this will happen when using the old style thread cones with the slit in the edge to keep the thread from raveling off the spool. To prevent the thread from hanging up, turn the thread spool over so the slit is at the top instead of the bottom. Sometimes top thread breaks will happen if the thread becomes looped around the thread spool pin.

Remove the thread, ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and then rethread the upper thread. Verify that the thread path is correct and that the thread has not looped around a guide.

If the thread is fraying at the needle eye, the needle/thread are not compatible. Also, the tension may be too high.

Check that the upper tension disk is clean--no gunk buildup or thread pieces stuck.

If the thread is actually breaking when it penetrates the needle plate hole, there may be a burr or nick somewhere below that is catching the upper thread. You can wrap your finger with a piece of fine fabric, like an old pair of hosier, fine knit fabric, etc. and running your finger around in the bobbin area, under the needle plate. If you get snags, then you have a burr or nick. If it is small, you can sometimes smooth it with a fine emery board. If it is a large burr, you may need to purchase a replacement part.

Kenmore model#1385 thread keeps breaking machine never been used

Install a brand new needle. A bent/dull/damaged needle can cause broken thread.

Use only good quality thread--no old thread or bargain bin variety.

Make sure you are using the correct type of needle and thread for the fabric you are sewing.

All About Needles

Always Raise the Presser Foot then rethread the machine from the beginning. Check that the thread path is correct. Incorrect threading will also cause thread to break. (Make sure the thread is not hanging up on the thread spool causing it to break.)

Set the upper tension somewhere around the midway point (this is the standard factory setting). Test. You will probably need to tweak the tension to get it where the two threads meet in the middle of the fabric.

If the thread continues to break, there may be a burr or nick somewhere on the needle plate or the bobbin area that is catching and breaking the thread.

Birds nests under fabric and thread breaking.

My manual says the needle thread tension is too loose , OR the needle is to fine/heavy for the thread being used.

Needle keeps breaking the top thread...

In general, there are three main causes for this...
wrong needles (Singer), low quality thread (dual duty or all purpose), incorrect threading. Be sure to thread the needle from front to back.
