This could get a little dicey, especially if you are not comfortable working around electronics. First try a "Master Reset". This is done by turning the unit off, then pushing the "OK" + "Page" + "On" buttons at the same time.
If this does not fix it, then you may need to take the cover off the unit. This is where if you are not comfortable around electronic circuit boards, etc, I would suggest sending it back to Garmin. There are six small phillips head screws on the back side of the unit. With a small screwdriver, remove the screws. Be VERY careful with the screws on the right side of the unit (unit facing down with antenna hinge away from you). This hold the endcap to the antenna which is spring loaded. If you take the endcap off, you need to be careful with the spring that can pop out and easily become lost. Once the back is loose, gently pry the two halves apart. There is a small plastic plug with a red and black wire in a socket on the back of the circuit board. GENTLY use a small screwdriver or something similar and remove the plug from the socket. Leave it out for a short period of time (30-60 seconds), then plug it back in. Reassemble the GPS making certain the rubber gasket between the two sections is not crimped or kinked. Gradually tighten all of the phillips head screws in a criss-cross pattern until all are snug. Turn the GPS on as usual. If it is still locked up and the reset routine I described above does not work, it will most likely need to be repaired by the factory.

With the garmin off, hold down the right bottom of the screen and turn the garmin on, it will then ask you if you want to perform a hard reset. Choose yes and that should fix your problem.

Hi,
a 6ya Technician can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repair professionals here in the US.
click here to Talk to a Technician (only for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Goodluck!

"Detail maps Don't Support Routing" in Garmin Quest

I too have a Garmin Quest and yesterday felt like throwing it against the wall because of the above problem. I found the solution eventually. When you download the maps from the Garmin Maps page, where you select the maps download, make sure that the checkbox to "Include route calculation data" is ticked before downloading your maps. Also make sure that the total memory required for the number of maps selected does not exceed the available memory on your Quest. If you try to fit more information into your Quest than it can receive then you are bound to have some problems. The Quests seems to have different memory specifications. According to the USA spec the memory is only 128mb, the Garmin site says 115mb and the box that my Quest came in says that it has 243mb.

www.batteryship.com. Look on the screen for "GPS Devices". Click on that and it will take you to a page of pull down menus. Find the Garmin menu and just look for "Quest". Battery is about $25.

Screen froze up

"If your Quest locks up....on rare occasions, your Quest may freeze or lock up. In this case, reset the Quest by pressing the unit's Power key and the IN key at the same time. This will turn off your Quest. The unit will operate normally when you turn it on again."

Missing the letter S

I called Garmin customer service and they told me to plug the unit into my computer and it would reset itself and all the letters would be restored. I did this and it worked! I realize the usb cable does not come with the Garmin nuvi 250, however you may have a cable that came with a cell phone or a digital camera. My camera cable worked great.

If you have forgotten your PIN number, and your security location, send the unit to Garmin and they will reset it for you. You will have to provide proof of purchase.
