defrost cycle will cause ice to melt slightly and stick together. If it happens too often, it may be cycling the defroster too often. That may be caused by opening the freezer too often.
This could be because the ice is clumped in the ice bin. When the automatic defrost cycle
occurs, heat is transferred to the freezer area. This can cause the cubes to melt
slightly and refreeze back together. You can take the bin out and give it a good
shake, or simply discard the cubes and start over with a fresh batch of ice cubes.
By increasing the amount of food in the freezer compartment, you may be able to buffer
the heat that comes from the defrost cycle and avoid clumping issues.
If you have a large ice bin and hardly use any ice, it is possible
that the cubes have gotten stuck together just from the weight of the
cubes on top of others.

cbscarter,
This may sound strange but you will find that the mold coating is peeling off of the aluminum mold. This causes the water to wick (climb) the loose coating and up over the top, leaking out making an ice clump on the ice maker and clumps ice in the container together. It would be easy enough for the average person to replace the ice make. Due to its age that would be smarter to replace than to repair the old one. It is a Whirlpool part #4317943 and comes with some instructions.
sounds like your just might not be using enough ice and they are defrosting and clumping together.figure your pulling ice from front of bucket the the backs hardly get used espescially in winter your not using as much ice. or ice maker is slightly over flilling water and dripping over rear of unit
