Wiring a Pump for 220

Should only be two wires out of the pump. Three if you count ground. If you have two blacks and a white, Hot and Hot go to the black, Ground or Neutral goes to the white. If more wires, please respond.

The pump was left off for a couple of weeks. When I try to turn it back on, the circuit breaker trips. I banged the pump housing with a rubber mallet bu it still trips the breaker. Thank you

You may have a blown motor start capacitor, or the motor shaft has seized up. Try to see if you can reach the impeller through the hole in the back of the pump pot and spin it with your finger. If you can't then it has seized and you will need to take it apart to see if something is jamming the impeller or the bearings are locked up. Make sure you have the power off before you try to spin the impeller with your finger or you could end up missing a finger if it should start running.

Hayward SP2807X10 Pump Motor doesn't turn on but hums. It has a lot of rust on the bottom. New motor bearings or capacitor?

Thank you for posting your question here on

It could be the pump is bound up or the bearings seized but it is more likely the motor is failing. It may be a small part such as the capacitor or the starting switch, but could also be more severe such as the winding itself. You will also want to examine the shaft where it passes thru the pump and motor and look for signs of rust from a pump seal leak.

If you are not familiar with testing these parts your best bet would be a local electric motor repair shop to see if the motor can be repaired or if it would need to be replaced. They should also be able to ensure there is no pump damage. If you wish to continue to try to repair it yourself please comment with any questions you have as you work thru the pump and motor.

If this answer does not fix your problem, please comment with additional details prior to rating the answer. Positive feedback is appreciated once your problem is solved!

Alot of rain flooded the area arond the pump twice which shut off motor is quit noisy?Whaddyathink??

the water has damaged the bearings, it's only a matter of time before the bearings get louder or seize all together. You can have the bearings replaced or get a new motor installed. A bearing replacement is 2/3 the cost of a new motor and the rest of the components are still old and perhaps damaged from the flood. Your call, I'd go for a new motor.

I think I have the same problem as steve_prier. Motor hums but does not turn/pump water, and then it trips the breaker and shuts off. Problem occurred 2 days ago. We have citrus trees and in the last...

Does the motor turn freely? You may have to remove the power and then remove the rear cover to get to the shaft to see if the motor or pump head is seized. If it turns freely, it may be as simple as replacing the start capacitor which you can see when you removed the rear cover.

Do not remove the rear cover till you have removed the power from the unit.

Let's try this first before we did any deeper.

Pump hums then breaker flips

Something is binding in the pump try the impeller to see if it runs true when you have it apart. It may be cross threaded on the shaft. This is a common problem if you have a air leak in your system.

What Horsepower my pump motor is?

The horsepower should be listed on the nameplate (left) of the pump motor (in very tiny letters - hp). If the motor nameplate is burnt or worn off, sometimes a part number of the impeller (right) can tell us which hp your pump motor is.
