You have to fix error on harddisk.
If you have winrecovery disk you can boot your computer with winxp recovery disk then boot computer with recovery disk then type in recovery console prompt "chkdsk /r" then pres "y"
then it fix error on harddisk.

If the computer does not start, not even in Safe Mode, the problem can be fixed only reinstalling Windows.

On Netbooks with no optical drive, like your EEE, the easiest way to reinstall windows is using an external CD rom connected to USB and a Windows install disk.

An external CD rom starts at about $24: Amazon.com: 24x USB External Slim CD-ROM

On screen message telling me windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt- <windows root>\system32\hal.dll. Laptop does not start or boot properly

Time to get out that restore disc you made when you first got your laptop. The boot sector has errors. Boot with your rescue disc and run CHKDSK/F to clear the errors.
Hope that helps.

Hello,

Enter your Windows OS installation CD into your ASUS laptop's CD-ROM, then restart your computer.
When your computer restarts, instead of booting up normally you will now see a Windows "Welcome" screen. Press "Enter" to continue. At the next screen, press "F8" to accept the Windows licensing agreement.

From here, i believe you can continue the process to reload or repair the operating system on your system.

Take care.

Error message

Can you get as far as the F8 boot menu? (press F8 to bring up a menu after booting). Try it and see if you can boot to last known good configuration or in safe - mode.

If that doesn't work, and if you have your original Windows CD, insert that and follow the instructions to repair your installation.

If none of the above works, let me know and I'll try to help you further. If it does, please rate. Thanks.

2 problems, your using a netbook that doesnt have an optical drive (cd/dvd) and you need a windows cd.
I dont think there is anything you can do until you call your retailer and request a copy of windows cd.
After that you can do a windows repair. Use the link below to see you options for accessing the cd once you have it.

This shouldn't be your problem; if the unit is new, go back to the source from which it came and let them deal with it. Any new machine should start without that kind of problem. Since it is missing a critical file, you may not be able to start it in the so-called 'Safe mode.'

Desktop theme changes at startup

That's not supposed to be a problem... When you log in to your account windows loads your personal settings, as well as other programs, so it's supposed to take time. Windows probably has the theme set on default so it would show that while your settings are loading. That or you've got a virus... But... if you think your computer is unusually slow then that's a different problem. Try cleaning up your hard disk space and doing other sorts of stuff, like scanning for viruses to make it run faster.
