I AM HAVING THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM WITH MINE ! But before mine turns off, it shows a blurry squiggly red mark on the screen then shuts off and wont turn back on sometimes for several hours.. And everytime I CAN get it back on, I have to unlpug the whole thing and plug it back in...
Thus the line connected to a surge protector or some kind of line protector. This can be consider.
Or if this is a crt type tv. This could be a fault on high voltage section. Horizontal output transistor or flyback. But check also for loose connection/solder crack. That clicking sound may be the relay in action.
From the way you describe the problem, it seems you have a high voltage
leak. To check this, make the room dark and look into the back of the
TV while turning it on. If you see something like lighting jumping
around you have this high voltage problem. The TV will eventually
destroy itself under this condition. I would suggest not using it until
you get it repaired. The repair cost will be much lower if the TV is
still working when you take it in. The high voltage leak will destroy
more parts and cause the TV to stop working. Then it will blow a fuse.
Your problem is most likely caused by a cold solder joint in the vertical circuit. Normally this is easy to find and correct. The problem will only get worse over time, but not likely for more damage to occur.
After so many years of use is possible that the unit developed loose conections in the horizontal driver transformer and some other places,I will suggest not to use it like that because it will blow up and the repair will be more expensive, call a qualified tech and get an estimate.Good luck
