Question about Brother MFC 9700 All-In-One Laser Printer

Brother 9700 Quality of Rec. Faxes Is Good, Copies Light & Uneven

So I disassembled and cleaned all mirrors and lenses inside the document scanner assembly, reassembled and tested. Made no difference.Cleaned glass. Poor copy quality through ADF or flatbed scan - doesn't matter. Performed 05, 55 and 01 resets. Any other ideas anyone? I'll try anything at this point.

Actually the Brother 9700 has a widespread issue with the voltage current running through the drum. There is no miracle solution with this particual issue. The only solution my company has found was to use OEM drums, reman drums have a voltage problem for some reason. Reman toner fine, reman drum no. It took us about six months to figure it out, we tried everything scanner assemblies, scanner bulbs, cartridge contacts, interconnect board, LVPS. Literally everything that had to do with the scanner assembly. Nothing fixed the issue, until I grabbed a brother OEM drum and tried it in the unit which, I had been working on for three days.

Once again, you can change the scanner assembly all you want but more than likely if you are using a reman drum that is what is causing your issue. Keep in mind though I am only saying this is an issue with the 9700....the 8440,8660,8460, and even the ancient 4100 all work fine with reman's It just seems like a design flaw.

You need to go to reports and print out something like the user settings list. If it looks bad as well, then your toner or drum is at fault. if only faxes and copies look bad then you need a new scan assembly.

Test print is good. copies on glass only sharp when copy mode is set to 'text', but needs to be reset to 'text' each time. It won't stay on the 'text' setting.

Brother Intellifax. When I make copies and send faxes there is a 2 inch black line on the side of the paper, but not when i receive faxes. Do I need a new drum? They run approximately 189.00 so any help...

It is NOT the drum. It is your document scanner. 2 inches wide is big so most likely it is not the typical scrap of paper or whiteout that gets stuck to the scanner glass. Lift up the ops panel where the documents are fed in to be copied. Look for a strip of glass that runs from one side to the other. Make sure there is nothing on the glass. At 2 inched wide it is more likely that you have some of the LED's that light up going bad. Under the glass is a row of LED's that light up to scan the document. If a block of these are not lighting up then this then causes the black band to show up. If this is the case then you will need to have the scanner repaired or buy a new machine which might be cheaper. No question tho, it is in the scanner as this is the only area that will cause clean incoming faxes but bad copies and outgoing faxes.
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.

Copies do not print properly

Have you tried to reset the printer to factory defaults? possibly a internal software problem if everything else works fine, have you tried to scan a document to your pc?

there may be a firmware update available.

I am getting a light duplication on my copies half

The duplication problem can be either the drum or the fuser. Most likely your drum needs to be replaced. If you can measure the distance between the first print and its duplicate I might be able to help more.

thanks adi

Light Copies

If faxes come in ok then the developer is ok for now, and the problem is primarily 'optical'. The laser optics could be dirty and that is not something to be cleaned by an end user, however, you can try cleaning the scanner optics by turning off the machine, remove the screws around the scanner glass, remove the glass, clean and set aside, then slide the scanner to the side and clean the mirrors, and bulb, with a very soft cloth, and mild glass cleaner, replace and see if the quality has improved (It should be at least somewhat to quite a bit better)
Please let me know

Two lines, one on each side of copies made from feeder and faxes

Try cleaning the rollers inside the scanner including the glass inside and out with a soft damped cloth. Look also for a piece of paper, staple wires, paper clips or pencil lead jammed inside the rollers or somewhere in the corner.
Also, look for a foreign object or substance on the cold cathode tube light and clean it. Try also cleaning the mirror.

Print Quality Problem with Brother 2820 Fax

sounds like you are using generic drum and toner. try OEM (brother brand). you say copies are coming out completely gray. try printing an internal report from the control panel. if that is gray or received faxes are gray, then the problem is not in your scanner area, and i would wager you are using "generic" supplies.

Faded print quality

If your toner saver is off and still getting faded quality means you mirrors and Scanning Lamp are not reflecting images properly.
Now if you are handy on printer then you need to take off glass
bb15714.jpg from printer then you need to clean ADF units (mirrors, lense lamp etc)

sometime printer acts weired due to this problem while printer or make copies.

Copies and outgoing fax quality

your machine most likely has toner spills in it.
if you send faxes face side down follow these instructions ;
1- take out toner
2- look for thin glass strip on bottom inside the machine
3-wipe clean

if you make copies side up then do the same except look for glass strip on the upper side of machine

Black lines printing down the right side of the page

We had the same problem on outgoing faxes or copies, but not on "Help" pages printed from the device, or on incoming faxes. That made us suspect first the scanning glass had dirt or white-out on it - but even after we cleaned the bits of dirt from it, we still had black lines. So next we suspected the scanner lamp. To test it, we started a copy and in the middle of its pulling a page through the ADF, we popped open the ADF a bit to see there was a section of the scanner lamp burned out when it lit up. It matched our black line perfectly.

At the suggestion of a FixYa member, we purchased a Brother CIS Unit, part #LE7949001 from Vance Baldwin Electronics and followed the advice of another FixYa member on replacing the CIS unit. We have a full light on the scanner lamp now, with no black stripes or lines on the outgoing faxes or copies. Thank you FixYa for this forum, and thank you to those who share their knowledge with the rest of us.
