Re: help

Must boot machine into DOS only from floppy disc. Once in, first run chkdisk.exe on hard drive to correct errors. If, after this produces no results, must repeat process, then re-install Windows.

Starting Windows comes up that passes then all I get is a white mouse on a blank black screen for ever whats the deal?

Try restarting the computer and as soon as it begins to start up click on your " f8 " key repeatedly until a start menu comes up. Click on " safe mode" the computer will try to boot up to a simpler mode of windows. If this is successful you will get windows up with larger icons on a black background. Click on shut down / restart the computer will reboot to normal mode. This is often sufficient to resolve windows start up problems. If safe mode worked but the computer still does not fully start click on three keys at the same time " ctrl alt and delete" when you have the mouse only screen. This should bring up the " task manager" click on " run new task" and enter " explorer.exe" this should bring up your desktop

Window 7 every 20 minutes hang

Many things could be causing this, the first thing I would do is boot into safe mode and see if the issue continues.
Safe Mode

Just before the Windows 7 splash screen (black with windows logo) appears, press the F8 key to enterAdvanced Boot Options.

You should now see the Advanced Boot Options screen. If not, you may have missed the short window of opportunity to press F8 in the previous step and Windows 7 is probably now continuing to boot normally assuming it's able to. If this is the case, just restart your computer and try pressing F8 again.

Here you are presented with three variations of Windows 7 Safe Mode you may enter:

  • Safe Mode - This is the default option and is usually the best choice. This mode will load only the absolute minimum processes necessary to start Windows 7.

Try going to safe mode manually. The steps mentioned below will help you accessing the safe mode

Step 1: Shut down your PC completely.
Step 2: Turn on the Power button.
Step 3: As soon as you turn it on start hitting the F8 key on your keyboard until you get to a black screen called "Windows Advanced option". (If you don't get to that that screen but you end up reaching the blue screen than that means you have delayed in hitting the F8 key. start again from step 1.)
Step 4: As soon as you reach "Windows Advanced option" use your down arrow keys to choose an option called "Safe Mode/Safe mode with networking".
Step 5: Select that and HIT ENTER.

How to go in safe mode?

to go into safe mode, turn on your computer and constantly press F8 immediately. You will press the F8 button at the first black screen, that is, when your computer displays its log.

While pressing the F8, a windows option will be the next screen to appear, amongst the windows option, you will see safe mode there, use your keyboard arrow key to scroll to safe mode and press enter.

By now, your computer should be loading on safe mode.

Good luck.

I forgot my password on th welcome screen

I don't know what Windows you are using but you can try booting into "safe mode". Usually to do that you turn on your PC, then when it's doing all its POST things (black screen that has white writing ect) press F8 button till you get an option screen.

Press down arrow key till you highlight "Safe Mode" and this should let you logon as admin. from there go to the user area in control panel and remove the password for your account. then just restart.

This works in Windows XP, but as I say, I don't know what Windows you are on. and it may well work on other versions of Windows.

Hope this helps on some way

Dell xps 1530, gets black out

that's an OS problem, or malware. If you're running Windows, try to boot into safe mode (press F8 and choose "safe mode" or F5) and see if you get your desktop back. You can go directly into recovery mode from the F8 boot mode selection menu also.

Cant get into safe mode. tried toggling f8/f7 together but nothing

the key to getting into safe mode....tapping F8 (only that key) super fast, not stopping until you hear a beep...and see the option to boot into safe mode.  The most common reason that it will not work is that it is not pressed fast enough or early enough.  You will know that you missed your chance if you see the windows loading screen......start pressing it right away when you restart your computer and don't stop pressing F8 until you see the black screen with the white letters giving you the option to boot into safe mode.
Good Luck!

Unplugging all unnecessary devices such as printers, network cable, usb devices etc. and see if anything changes. Try rebooting it in Safe Mode:

To go into safe mode -- Press F8 key as soon as the pc restarts.

(You will have do again if pc starts in normal mode.)

You would see a black screen as soon as you hit f8.

Select Safe mode

On the black screen >> select the option that says

Dell 1200 Inspiron OS boot problem

Two things you should try to resolve this issue: -

  • Check that the FN button on the keyboard to switch from the Laptop monitor to external monitor has not been enabled - these are usually 3 state switches (Laptop screen ON, External screen ON, Both ON) it is really easy to accidentally hit this without realizing.
  • If this works there is no need to try the second option.
  • Try booting to safe mode - as the laptop boots up and you see the Bios summary screen depress the F8 button and you should receive a screen containing several options.
  • Select the option to Boot to safe mode.
  • If the laptop boots up ok then login to XP, don't be alarmed at the change in screen resolution.
  • Right-click My Computer on the desktop and select Properties - Hardware - Device manager
  • In the tree-view containing the different hardware select Display Adapters you should see your graphics card in there
  • Right-click and select Scan for Hardware Changes if it is ok the close and reboot as normal
  • If there is a problem here it implies the driver is somehow corrupted and may need re-installing from the disk that came with the laptop.

Getting out of the initial set up

First try to Boot to Last Known Good Configuration.. do this by pressing F8 upon bootup...look at the prompt screen for the option mentioned OR

Attempt to boot up in Safe Mode....
Do This by pressing F8 Upon bootup, it will take you to a black Safe Mode Options screen... once there choose the first option.. boot into Safe Mode Only.. If you are able to boot into windows that way,, you can then check for problems... Like checking the device manager for errors, Check the Status of your hard drive.. etc.
