There are no cracks in the screen.

  • jvanslam354 Jul 13, 2009

Thanks. It is impossible to know exactly where the buzz is coming from. I put my ear close to each of the boards, even had a helper do the same. It seems like its buzzing from either the side board with the larger heat sinks (although I disconnected power to that board and buzzing remained), or from a board in the center of the TV (area where A/V jacks are loacted). Are there any "known" issues of this type? Is there anything else I can do to rule out what is good/bad?

  • jvanslam354 Jul 13, 2009

Thanks. (1) I don't live in the U.K. (2) My home insurance has a larger deductable than the cost of a new 50" Panasonic Plasma, with warranty; (3) I was well aware I could buy a service manual from that website (and others)...I spent my money with Fixya, instead, to get an answer.

  • jvanslam354 Jul 14, 2009

I swapped power supply board (with a supposedly known good one) and the buzz did not change. Also checked all the Caps. All tested good. Any other thoughts on how to trace this down?

According to your comments and my experience, for sure you have a panel problem. The panel is cracked or leaking. It pulls down the power. Actually the buzzing noise comes from the panel. There are 3 kinds of boards connect to the panel(SC, SS and C). connect any two will make the noise, then you can confirm that the panel is bad. Sorry to say that. Please check the panel carefully for small crack.

Said issue cause actually short circuit most likely a defective capacitor or semiconductor. Buzz sound usual comes from ferro-magnetic transformers on the power supply. It happens when one or more DC output has short circuit or excessive current.
If you have a multimeter/voltmeter please test the outputs of DC power supply module. Please be extra careful as there will hazardous voltage on power supply circuit. If any of the output shows below average voltage unplug the power and follow the components that connects to that particular output. You may replace the capacitors if you find defective
Please post more if issue persists even changing the defective components
Good Luck

Hi I am Vortash it sounds to me as if somewhere on the set there is a short that is causing the SMPS to humm as it struggles to start .. as you can appreciate wtih problems of this type unless it is a stock fault that can be researched it would be very difficult to advise you on here as to what the fault may be .. you seem to have tried to cover most of the bases to no avail . I would then offer these 3 solutions to you .. as you seem Electronicaly competent the following site may be able to supply you with a circuit diagram if you do not already have one .. ( an earlier model as you knoww may have the same chasis so check this out and you may not have to pay for this circuit but just download the earlier model .. ) www.manualsparadise.com
if you are in the United Kingdom all though your set is out of Guarantee from the manufacturer , the shop that supplied it to you is liable for the set for up to Six years under the 1999 consumer credit act check out http://www.bbc.co.uk/theoneshow and this site will tell you of your full consumer rights .. If you are in the USA then I would check out your consumer laws as you may have a simillar protection ..

And Thirdly if the screen was cracked as an earlier person asked then it may be that you can claim for this set under an accidental damage clause from your insurers .. they will inspect the set and sometimes have the set looked at by an engineer to see if they can save by having the set repaired ,.. ( I have dealt with many claims officers and this is a common practice here in the UK ) at the very outset the fault may be explained to you and be cheap to repair if the insurance company dont do it for you .. Regards Vortash

(1) power light should be solid red, ok, power supply was a good first switch

If this tv is plugged into a surge protector or into the wall, please first try switching it to the other.

Many times if the power supply is not it, then there is a crack(s) on the inside of the screen which can short the video circuit. Please carefully look for any such cracks.

Also, have you located exactly where the buzzing noise is coming from? If not, that would be very helpful. If you open it up with it on, please be very careful not to touch anything.

Also, where is the buzzing coming from? You never answered my question. I can't see or hear the tv and so need as much specific information from you as I can get to diagnose the problem

the G.P.U has more than likely detached from the main board.
the x clamp mod is more of a diagnostic procedures than an
actual repair function. The G.P.U will need to be re-flowed to
the main board then lightly but firmly clamp to the board
then stress tested (force it to run hot for 15 min shut off and
repeat 3 times)

that's it

Panasonic Model TH-50PX60U (Screen shutting off..)

Most likely the TV has a power supply related problem. The most common thing to go out is the circuit board that supply power to the screen. Commonly called a Backlight Inverter Board.
But, I can't say it's 100% the problem because I can't actually look at the tv over the internet.
If by chance the TV is still under warranty, go that route.
If not under warranty and If you have some electronic experience, if you can find and purchase a Service Manual over the internet; It will help you diagnose the source of the problem and fix it by soldering in the new part. The Service Manual will give you red light blinking codes, circuit diagrams, test points, and part# lists. Usually, cost under $20. And most cases the new part cost less than $15.

I hope I shed some light on the subject for you.
