I pulled the following from a snaper model similar to yours.
The snowthrower has two drive belts, one for the traction
drive-which transmits engine power to the wheels, and
a second for the auger drive-which transmits engine
power to the auger mechanism.
Each of these drive belts are of special construction and
should be replaced only with genuine replacement belts
which match the original equipment belts. These are
available from your dealer.
Traction Drive Belt Replacement
I pulled the following from a snapper model similar to yours. Believe it should help.

1. Disconnect spark plug wire and fasten it away from
the spark plug.
2. Remove belt cover. (Located in back of the discharge shute).
3. Pull the traction drive belt idler pulley arm (See
Figure 24) away from the belt to relieve tension, and
slide the belt off the engine pulley.
4. Slip the belt off from around the traction pulley (See
Figure 29) and pull the belt out of the unit between
the auger pulley and the traction pulley (the lower
cover need not be removed for this step).
5. Reverse the procedure to install the new belt. Be
sure there are no twists in the belt, and that the belt is
properly seated in the pulley grooves.
6. Replace the belt cover.
7. Start the unit, and check the traction drive for proper
operation. See "Traction Clutch Cable Adjustment"
for adjustment procedures.

There are also several videos on YouTube on changing snowthrowr belts. (Didn't see one for your blower, but most similar and should provide a good starting reference).

Why does my snowthrower engine bog down when throwing snow

It should slow down some as it is under a load. As long as it throws the snow far enough no problem. If not the speed governor may need adjusting. Make sure you have fresh fuel.

Have a craftsmand 24" snowthrower

If the motor runs well, the two most common causes of this are the drive belt is worn and/or the shear pins are broke.
If you remove the cover (usually plastic) in the middle of the snow thrower and look at the belts.
Your operator's manual will show you how to remove the cover and check/change the belts.
If you don't have a copy you can get the manual through managemyhome.com
You will need the model number off the snowblower. It is usually located on the bottom right hand corner of the frame (from the handle side)
The model number looks like 247.123456.
The belt closest to the blower assembly drives the auger/blower and the belt closest to the engine drives the transmission. It sounds like you need to inspect the blower belt.
With the engine not running, have someone depress the drive lever and check the belt.
You should only be able to depress the long side 1/2 inch or less. More than that the belt has stretched and needs to be replaced.
On some older blowers you can adjust the tension pulley, but most made in the last 15 years, you can't.
The belt may be frayed on the edges or glazed causing it to slip (it is shiny on the sides of the belt) It may be torn and broke completely.
Replace the belt if it is worn, stretched or frayed
The shear pins are located on the auger in the front of the machine. Your newer Craftsman has four. If you don't now about them look in your operator's manual for the location. You need all four for the snowblower to work well. Replace the missing ones.
You can get parts for you Craftsman and most MTD made models through searspartsdirect.com. With other makes you can get parts through jackssmallengines.com
If you are unfamiliar with repairing machines you can get your snow blower repaired by taking it to your local Sears.
They will have a technician troubleshoot and repair the unit.

Wheels losing power on Ariens 5520 snowthrower

i would open the bottom access panel and tighten the tension on the drive belt. i had a simailar problem with my 5520, it wasn't my wheel drive, but my thrower. it would throw snow intally, but stop as soon as it got in deep snow. when i opened the panel, i noticed the the tension on the belt was really loose. so i pushed the fly wheel close to the belt and tightened the fly wheel..and VIOLA as good as new. hope that helps...

Model 42 snowthrower throws more belts than snow.

what might be happening is that somthing is seezing as you are using it, a smoking belt meens that either the motor has seezed at some point and has burnt the belt, this in turn has made the belt thinner so will slipp allot, but i think the main problem is a bearing is seezing when it gets hot, thats possibly why it last a while then runs the belt, move the pullies in and out up and down to see if there is movement in them if there is they will need replacing, also feel if they are smooth when turned by hand, listen to them and see if you can hear a bit of graunching this is also a give away that the bearings are u/s...hope that helped

Craftsman snowthrower will not throw snow

I have the same machine and it sounds like the belt is indeed slipping.  If the belt is not worn or stretched too badly, you can perform a small adjustment on the idler-wheel (the thing that controls belt tension) by sliding back the plastic cover on the spring that is attached to the bottom of the lever-cable and tightening the nut so that there is less slack in the cable.  If the nut is all already all the up, then you need to replace the belt, which can be easily accessed by removing the plastic cover in front of the motor under where the spare shear pin compartment is located.  There are two bolts (one on each side) that need to be removed and then the cover just pulls off.  This will expose both belts.  The front one is for the auger drive and the rear one is for the wheel drive.  The belt can be easily replaced without any further dis-assembly by simply removing and replacing it in the reverse manner.  Don't forget to readjust the spring so that excessive tension is not applied to the new belt.  Hope this helps.

Snow thrower won't throw snow

the problem could be the snow is to heavy for the motor to keep up, if thats the case you may need to upgrade to a more powerful model or try not to overload it. take it a little slower so the motor can keep up. but try tightening the belt. with your pointer finger push down on the belt it should have about a half inch give, if it moves more than that its too loose and probably slipping under load
