Question about Garden

1 Answer

I have a mountfield classic 35. It struggles to run smoothly until it is almost out of fuel. The plug gets very oily. If the mower is tipped backwards the fuel flow is restricted and the mower runs well. What can I do to fix this?

Replace the carby diaphram between the tank and carby that will fix it (diaphram controls the fuel pump and when faulty can make engine rich or lean with revs impossible to control)

Things I would check on a brand new mower no start.

Does it have the correct oil level? some motors self protect and will not run without oil.

May be a dud coil or plug , but would take it back to the shop if you cant check that yourself (remove plug, reconnect it, ground it to frame, do you see a spark when pulling the starter?

Briggs and stratton 35 classic wont start, what can i do?

take the plug lead off and hold it near to some metal part on the mower, move the throttle lever to around midway and pull the mower cord, if there is a spark the electrical part of the mower is working.
remove the plug, put the lead back on the plug and earth the plug on a metal area and pull the cord again, if there is spark across the points on the plug then the plug is ok, if not replace the plug and try again.
assuming that the plug and lead checks out fine then check the fuel supply, remove the air filter from the side of the carbi and spray some fuel directly into the throat of the carbi and pull the starter cord, if the engine runs for a few seconds you can assume that you have a fuel problem, possibly the filter inside the fuel tank is clogged.

My mountfield hp164 petrol mower starts but wont run smoothly even when the engine is warm it is constantly idling erratically

Check sparkplug ie remove and clean. Set gap normally 1mm. Check s/p lead has firm connection. Check manual for correct fuel requirements. Other wise take it to the mower repair shop. It's not worth your time to muck around with it. Too frustrating!

The 12.5 murray 38 in runs fine until i engage the blades, while engaged the mower runs fine for about five seconds then starts to spit and sputter.once i disengage the blades it runs smoothly again

The problem is in the carb. First try using some bottled fuel system cleaner at a heavier dose than for a car, but be aware that too much may damage the carb. Then run the fuel out and fill with fresh and try again. When you engage blades and it sputters try to throttle down until it runs smooth and then slowly bring engine back up to mowing speed. You should be able bring it up and mow. Run out the fuel tank. If unable to do this trick and get the fuel system cleaner through you will need to have the carb. taken apart and cleaned thoroughly.

Lawn mower dies when it gets hot when it cools off it starts until hot again I've changed the coil and module

you should change the oil and make sure you are using a good oil. Also, make sure your fuel line isn't running next to any place where it can heat up.

Have a mountfield honda GCV135, need to change oil but cant find the plug? and want to know about air filter cleaning?

Here is the manual.... : http://www.smallenginewarehouse.com/images/manuals/GCV135-160.pdf

On page 28 of the pdf file it says you have to shut off the fuel and then remove the oil filler cap/dipstick and then tip the engine to drain the oil.

Air filter cleaning procedures are on page 31 of the pdf file.

Thanks for using FixYa.
