Question about Garmin iQue 3600 GPS Receiver

1 Answer

Ique 3600 can not charge thru cradle and car unit but only thru travel charger, using the pin connector (Green light does not appear when using the main connector on ique 3600, although hot sync and routing instructions thru car unit work). There is no damage to the cables and nothing seems to be wrong with the connectors underneath the Ique 3600. (I had been using an external power pack with 4 alkaline batteries hooked to the pin connector = 6 volts (but these were running out of energy) , and I read in a review page, later on, that it is better to use rechargable batteries instead of alkaline, because of the high voltage sent to the internal lithium 3.8 volt battery, but I donĀ“t know if this created the problem).

Electricity meter measures resistance of 5 ohms between the the 1. connector of the 16-pin connections, which is the minus connection, or ground, and the pin in the pin connector but 0 resistance between the the 1. connector of the 16-pin connections and the 16. connector, which is the + connection.

Can this happen when the battery is running out of lifetime, although mine does not show significantly less capacity?

Where I can I buy the 16-pin connections (display shown on the internet), if I replace it by myself? Garmin says that they do not sell spare parts.

The battery had been emptying itself faster than usual, and after it emptied itself, I did a soft reset but then the iQue switched the backlight to the brightest, and no success in resetting at that moment. After that the green light would be flashing quickly (which supposedly means that the battery is not taking charge) when charging thru the travel charger, but finally the green light would stay on and the battery would get charged and it did not empty itself quickly, but no success in using the cradle connector or the car unit for charging (green light does not light). Could this be a problem with the circuit board on the lithium battery or the battery itself instead of the 16-pin internal palm universal connector? http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?... http://www.pdainternalbattery.com/1a2w42...

Soldered from the horizontal part towards the exterior and the bottom part of the tin touches the pin in the cradle.

Adviceble to use some soft glue to hold the jog wheel as well as the power button together.

Solved:Opened the iQue and used a heated knife to cut horizontally into the + pin and it comes like a U, upside down, from the circuit board, and the exterior side of it was broken. Used tiny plastic and sealant in the hollow space inside the connector and soldered thin copper wire (used for exploding dynamite) from the horizontal part towards the exterior.

Fritzed Unit when antenna up

I have a similar problem but I can't turn the GPS off at all, even when the antenna is down. As far as the power on/off cycle, I found another link on this site that said to turn off WAAS while the GPS is off then when you turn it on the unit will not power cycle continuously. You loose the WAAS feature but the GPS and unit still works.

There are larger capacity baterys avalable.

You can get a charger that fits in the tiny little charging port, on the lower right side next to the "cradle teeth". But of course you will STILL not be able to sync.
Radio Shack has a set of port adapters, the little yellow one fits. Be SURE to plug it in the correct way around. (Bring iQue to Radio Shack when you buy adapter.)

Can't get connection b/w PDA and desktop

Is the charging light on? Even with the light on, you may not be getting a good contact with the connector. IMHO the Garmin iQue 3600 USB cradle has the worst connector design in all gadgets I have known and used. You have to drop the PAD vertically into the connector and then lean it back to "lock" it in place. To remove it, you have to reverse the procedure. If you're not handling it gentle enough, you may bent one of the little bouncy metal contacts (making it shorter than the the rest). Look closely at the pins and make sure they are aligned in one straight line and all with same height. At one time, I have to press it tight against the base to ensure a firm contact thru out the whole sync process. Hit the sync button, if you hear the "sync sound" right away, you are ok. Otherwise, cancel and do it again. If one of the pins is shorter than the other, try to "pull" it up with a small needle nose plyer. You can also use dental-floss to wrap around the pin and pull it up. If all fails, you can start looking for a new charge/sync cradle...

Sound as though you shorted something on the main board when you installed the new battery. Just sell the unit for parts on Ebay
