Question about Western Digital External USB 2.0 80 GB Hard Drive

HCT 7" DVD player does not read external hardrives (e.g 500gb, et

My External Western Digital 500 GB drive will not load using the USB connection. No movies are displays in menu, nor can you view any.

Owners Manual says HCT using only USB 1.0 interfaces, does this have something to do with it if the external drives use USB 2.0?

The drive works fine with my computer, so I know its not the cable or the external drive. Pretty sure its the HCT DVD player. I've already replaced it once. I believe this is a know problem with HCT brand. The owners manual even states that they had problem with the USB interface. Tried to go to HCT website, but nothing is there. I've seen this reported on your webpages with 80 gb drives as well. Software fix available?

    Anything else I can try?

Hey John,

This seems to be an issue with the HCT player. Please specify the exact model number for the Dvd player so that I can research further on that.

    Hey John,

Its for sure a issue with the HCT DVD player. I can not think of a possible solution for this as this player only supports USB 1.0. Though USB 2.0 devices are backward compatible with 1.0. Still the issue seems to be with the player itself.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue.

My passport 500gb external just stopped working. It froze up so I removed it and plugged it back in. When I plugged it back into my computer it starts spinning but then makes a click sound and stops.

The clicking sound is caused by the spindle inside the hardrive, because it was not removed properly. Just connect you external hardrive to your computer, if it makes the clicking sound again dont remove it yet, just restart your computer properly. In that way all the devices connected to the computer will be refreshed and properly shut down. If it is not detected still, unplug the haardrive then try another USB port. Recommended ports are at the back of the CPU if your using a desktop. These USB ports have higher voltage output that can power up all external hardrives properly.

I cannot copy files FROM my Western Digital 500GB

Hi,

Check the file system of your hard drive. If your PC is recognizing it, check if its a FAT or NTFS. If it is NTFS then you have to reformat it using your Mac and choose FAT. Mac OS recognizes NTFS as a read only drive. If you plan using it with your PC and MAC you should format it using your mac and choose MS-DOS in disc Utility. You cannot format the drive using your PC Computer with a FAT file system because of the capacity. Only Mac can format it with a FAT file system.
