With a volt meter hooked up to the battery ,what is the voltage with the engine running ? Should be 13. 1 to 14.1 ! Is your charge light (battery symbol ) lit with the engine running ? Is there B+ at the wire on the back of the alternator ? The small wire is the lamp driver circuit , should have B+ as well key on engine not running .

Either the battery is a dud, (cant retain a charge) or the alternator is not charging possibly due to a wire not connecting or wires incorrectly connected or both. Check voltage at the alternator (large terminal) without motor running, should be around 12 to 13 volts

SOURCE: Car starts runs and then dies.

If the original battery ever broke one of the posts, acid would have leaked into the cable end. This usually happened to the positive cable. Check for corrosion in both cables by pulling off the plastic cover on the cable ends. If if looks green in the cable end where it should be copper the cable is bad.

SOURCE: car starts when boosted but wont start by itself

The battery is obviously dead either due to a bad alternator or dead cells in the battery itself. If you can drive it after its boosted to start and it runs, its most likely the battery. Get it boosted again and take it to a local auto parts store, leave it running and have them check the alternator to see if its charging.

SOURCE: 1997 bravada wont start

Hook fuel pressure gauge up to port near firewall. A battery charger sometimes boosts the vehicle voltage just enough to engage weak fuel pump. Should show 50-60 lbs all the time while cranking when not starting on battery.

Galant wont start

Interesting, this sounds just like no output from the alternator. If the alternator is good then it has to be the cabling or connections to the battery. If you have a multimeter take a reading on the cabling then read what is actually reaching the battery posts.

Car battery dying

The light is telling you the battery is low on charge. What you need to do is check the alternator and see if it is putting out the correct amperage. If you go to Auto zone they can check this for you and I believe it is free. Another test you could do is start the car and pull the positive cable from the battery and if the car dies then you have a charging problem and most likely is the alternator. A couple things about the battery itself. Make sure the connections are clean and tight. If the alternator is good then maybe the battery is not taking the charge from the alternator.

2001 new beetle battery drain wont start

Alternator!!! Boost the car, if starts let it run for a few min. Once the car has stayed running for a couple of min, unhook the negative terminal on the battery, if it stays running, the battery is junk. If it dies, the alternator is junk. But this is just my past experience, and it worked.

Never know.

I can boost my car and it will run fine then I turn it off and it wont start again is it a battery that needs to be replaced

this sounds like a bad alternator, that is the job of the alternator besides powering your car after start up, the alternator should keep the battery charged, believe it or not cranking your car is the only job your battery has unless you just switch you ignition to accessory, once you start the car everything runs off the alternator , a quick test for the alternator is this , crank the car and very temporarily unhook the positive battery cable, if the car does'nt die after 2 or 3 seconds the the alternator is putting out a charge

Our car just dies out all of a sudden and it sounds like the car wants to start. Then we boost it for awhile maybe 30 mins to an hour to finally start then it will start good for a couple of days. Then do...

Its dying because the battery is not being charged, and it takes power to run the ignition pak to run motor and electrical systems. I would have the alternator checked out as that seems to be the most obvious problem, only other solution is battery will not take a full charge. usually if the alternator is charging it will supply the power to run the car, but if the battery wont take a charge then it will not have enough power to start the car or run the voltage that the ignition needs to operate. solution is bad battery or bad alternator.
