Question about Computers & Internet

My burner stopped reading cds and burning cd's. The computer recognizes that there is a drive there, but the drive does not work. Any ideas? I can't figure how to update its firmware or anything.I don't have the cd any longer that came with it, but I guess it wouldn't matter considering it won't read any cd's.

Know that I'm not perfect, and may not have the solution to all questions in my areas of expertise, but I would like you to consider this.

1.Windows has the nasty habit of losing 'bits and pieces' of crucial software codes, for various hardware peripheral components. Everything will be just fine, then one day, BOIING! A certain peripheral device doesn't work. The driver codes are corrupted.
The device is recognized, but now there are no software drivers so that the O/S can interact with the device. (Operating System. Windows XP is an example of an O/S)

1A.The solution is to go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs, and ->Remove all of the software related to that peripheral device. (Such as your optical drive 'burner')
Since you don't have the CD disk anymore, this point is moot. BUT, read on!

2.Some 'burner' software has to be re-registered on a yearly basis. I know of one such software that begins with an N, but slamming someone will not make it better. Not professional.
2A.This again goes to needing new burner software.

Well guess what? I use a free burner software that has been better for me, than any of the expensive paid versions I've had! Infra Recorder.
3.Info about Infra Recorder on Wikipedia,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infra_Recorder
4.Download page for Infra Recorder,
http://infrarecorder.org/?page_id=5
(Just click on the blue -> Download <- to the left of -> version 0.46.2 for Windows 2000/XP/Vista (3.19 MiB)

Suggest you follow what I have typed in 1A above, then download and install Infra Recorder.

I like it when free stuff, (Open Source software), is better than the paid stuff! lol!

The pc won't burn cd's seems like it doesn't recognize cds or dvds

Does the cd/dvd drive read cds? This is a good test to ensure that the drive is functional.

Sometimes, generic cd/dvd burners do not recognize certain types of blank discs. Try another type of
brand blank discs, it should work.

My CD/DVD drive is: HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA-H55N I have XP Home. I have burned numerous CDs in the past and more recently burned several DVDs. Today I wanted to burn a CD and found that suddenly my CD is...

Because they handle two kinds of media, combination drives essentially have two optical pickup assemblies in one package. CDs and DVDs both look the same, but they need different laser light wavelengths to read and write them. It's not uncommon for a drive to go bad the way you're describing, where one kind of disc begins not working while the other kind is unaffected.

An optical assembly is two parts: the laser to generate the light for reading and writing, and a sensor to pick up the light that is reflected for reading. Over time the laser power drops, and there's not enough light for the disc to be read reliably or, as in your case, to even detect the disc. Since you say you've burned numerous CDs, you've put more wear on the CD side, so it's probably just worn out.

There are internal adjustments to tweak the laser power and information is out on the Web about how to squeeze a little more life out of the drive. But the cost of a new combo drive is so low now that there's no reason not to simply replace one when it fails. TigerDirect is one company I buy lots of parts from, and they have two drives that are just $20: this one if your current drive is a SATA type (narrow data cable), or this one if your old drive is an IDE drive (a wide 40-pin data cable). I'm just using those for examples, since there are many other sources.

Another option is to get an external USB burner, and then you'd have a drive you could use on different computers if you wanted, and you wouldn't have to go through the effort of replacing an internal drive (although it's not difficult).

My cd is well ....i have no idea

Sounds like a tough problem to have because half of the CD drive is working fine (the reading part) but half isn't (the writing/burning part).

Here are a few suggestions:

1) try a different CD writing program, if the Wizard says the CD-Rs are full, try a version of Nero or a freeware burning program.

2) if, when you load the blank CD, Windows says that it's unable to burn it, it might not be a CD that your burner can recognize. If you are using different or new CDs, try another one or borrow someone else's blank CD. I've had it happen where a set of CDs that I bought were bad and couldn't be used. Also, some cheap CDs don't work on some CD burners.

3) It might be a bad CD drive. If it's an older computer, you might have to get a new CD drive. Before doing this, I'd try reinstalling the software and drivers for your CD burner and try both the suggestions from above. Good luck

NEC 3540A stopped reading blank DVD+DL

Hi JonPM
Burning a dual layer disk requires a functionality of the drive that is not used in the burning of normal disks. But before we consider that the drive may have a mechanical problem, lets clean out all your temporary garbage. Click on this link and download Cleanup 4.5.2 (http://majorgeeks.com/CleanUp_d4895.html

Instal and run the program. Once it has finished, reboot your computer and give burning onto the DL disk another try. Let me know what happens.
